It was obvious from the beginning of s4 that what Sam's doing will end very badly for everyone, but I supported him because HE WAS TRYING. And while it did have bad consequences, it was also a valuable lesson for him. And THAT's what's priceless in screwing up - ability to learn.
(Cas SHOULD have backed off at the end of 6x20 though - Dean did give him the way out, I'll give it to him, but still. COME ON.) He could have, but I guess he didn't seea reason. He was already so deep in this, I doubt he thought that he could afford to start over Dean's way.
That's Cas for you. Hopelessly, helplessly in love with Dean Winchester. And in need of love and affection and - FUCK YOU, WINCHESTERS - kind words of support. Because really, he gave up on his own family for Dean, you might think that he should have at least GAINED something from that, but no. He didn't get anything from Dean (apart from more demands) PLUS he already severed all the ties he had. Desperation, level 10.
YES. Though I'd love it if he felt guilty all along. I mean I'd pretty much die if that happened - oh dear I'm such an angst whore at times. OH YES, YUMMY. And he should feel guilty, about everything. First he should feel guilty that he didn't see the signs, then he should feel guilty that he didn't help when he should have (6x21, khem), THEN he should feel guilty that he can't find a way to save Cas. (And of course he should feel guilty if he fails to save Cas, but let's hope it won't come to that).
NEVER destroyed. Reshaped, given a new purpose, brought to a whole new level of awesome - yes, but never destroyed. Desperately clinging to one version of Cas isn't healthy, because he's a character, he's bound to evolve and change. And for all we know that might have been evil monster souls talking. That's the point, here, we DON'T KNOW.
*is still secretly hoping for a series end where they get Cas out of that ordeal and TFW rides into the sunset on the car but that might be too optimistic I fear* I'm secretely hoping for a series end where Castiel falls. And Bobby adopts him as a walking, talking encyclopedia. And they open something akin to the Roadhouse, but much more nerdy. :)
