memes + happy new year's! <3 + fic blathering

1. Hiii world! Uh, first post of 2011 apparently? I hope the new year started great for all of you. ♥ I've tried to catch up with the fl and commented here and there (I probably will randomly comment on some stuff I have open) but it really was a lot of stuff, so I hope I didn't miss anything too huge. I had a great time at NY's, which was awesome even if I kept on feeling like crap until the 30th. Whatever, I think I'm pretty much okay now.

2. I also have some TV thoughts but since I'm catching up with things now that I have practically nothing to do until school starts in two months I'll save that for later. Maybe after I do those fandom memes that are around.

3. Speaking of memes, have a couple from [livejournal.com profile] wandersfound.

3a. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Uhm. Went to a convention (& all related things, because I never was face to face with someone famous for more than ten seconds before). Wrote a thesis. Got a sorta serious job that wasn't repetitions but was a lot less paid. Probably something else but I can't recall.

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Did I make New Years' resolutions last year? If I made one it probably was to procrastinate less and I sure as hell didn't keep it. I'll probably make it again and I probably won't keep it, but let's see.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.

Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.

What countries did you visit?
Scotland! <3

What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
More of a social life.

What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
December 13th because I graduated. Then... November 1st because I saw The Promise. And probably October 4th because it was when I found out I was about not to graduate and I freaked so hard I couldn't even. And April 2nd-4th because HEY SPN CON tho I should probably specify the 3rd because HI I KISSED MISHA THANKS IT WAS GOOD TO KNOW YOU ALL.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Graduating.

What was your biggest failure?
Having a pretty sorry social life.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yes, exactly the last six days of the year. :/

What was the best thing you bought?
I can't say the JIB ticket because I bought it in 2009, so... ugh idek probably the new printer? I was kind of sick of not printing.

Whose behavior merited celebration?
I can't come up with anything re this atm.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Someone who should be unnamed whom I thankfully met just for a short while of time and made me swear in my head in a lot of different languages.

Where did most of your money go?
Probably the convention. And BOOKS. And records. But mostly convention and books I didn't have time to read.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Well meeting Misha. The couple concerts I managed to see. Go seeing The Promise with Bruce being there. <3 I should've been more excited about graduating but by the end I just wanted to be done. A lot of things I wrote.

What songs will always remind you of 2010?
Mmh..
a) Folk Bloodbath - Josh Ritter
b) The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll - Bob Dylan
c) What Do You Got - Bon Jovi
d) Lungs - Steve Earle
e) The Weight - The Band

Compared to this time last year, you are:
i. happier or sadder? def. happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? thinner. indeed thinner. hopefully the answer won't change next year.
iii. richer or poorer? richer because I got money for graduation, lol. And I got paid for the library. I wasn't working last year, so..

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Having a more decent social life would probably encompass it.

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastination.

How did you/will you be spending Christmas / Hanukkah?
I spent Christmas catching up on H50 and the next day throwing up while at grandparents' so uhm, let me forget about that asap.

What was the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in 2010?
lol anytime someone who worked at the library and wasn't a student caught me playing Spider in dead moments on the library's computer?

Did you fall in love in 2010?
Nope.

How many one-night stands?
Lol. -> what she said.

What was your favorite TV program?
Which isn't a TV show? Both of my favorites were Italian so idk. If you mean a show in general, Deadwood. If you mean a show that's airing, probably SPN overall, tho the vampire porn remains the highlight of my Fridays because it never disappoints me and I don't stress about it, lol.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Uuuhm, that person whose behavior made me swear in ten different languages, but I also met them this year so it wasn't like I changed feelings. In that case no one. But with that person it was pretty much 'ohdear I can't stand your face' after a really short while. I think they felt the same. I'm absolutely not displeased because of that.

What was the best book you read?
ORYX AND CRAKE OMG. <333 THIS CLOSE TO PERFECTION.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Uuuhm either Josh Ritter (thanks [livejournal.com profile] wandersfound) or my newfound Nick Cave appreciation. I mean, I've liked Nick Cave for ages but he became an utter favorite this year. Though if we're talking about new people yeah, then Josh Ritter. And/or Joe Pug who's the guy who opened for Steve Earle last December and is pretty damn good too.

What did you want and get?
Graduate/lose weight/try haggis.

What did you want and not get?
Be more social/write that blasted Dean/Castiel regency AU which I didn't manage to finish/read fifty books.

What was your favorite film of this year?
That I watched this year or that was out this year? Anyway this deserves more than one answer, so. Of the ones out this year most definitely Des hommes et des dieux, tho The Road deserves a mention (but I'd have watched it in 2009 if I had seen it when it came out in the US and not like six months later when it got limited release here which is why I'm mentioning it), while the best I watched regardless of the date would probably be The Beguiled.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 22 and uuh, I went to lunch with the family on my mom's side (we were in Sicily), it was a pretty awesome lunch, I probably wrote fic in the evening and idk, the lunch was the biggest thing happening. But it was excellent.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not having to endure all the bureaucracy university fail I had to endure. There's a reason I was wiped when I graduated, and not in the satisfying way. Though if when the Dark Tower movies were announced someone said that they already cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Eddie it'd have been a close second. I hope it makes next year more satisfying, though I'd be happy with anyone who doesn't fuck the role up..

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Lol. Or, more eloquently, pick whatever is in your pile of clothes and be proud to wear pink.

What kept you sane?
Internet, writing, music, a few friends.

Which celebrity / public figure did you fancy the most?
Misha Collins. <333333

What political issue stirred you the most?
Pretty much everything that happened in Italy since like June? And it wasn't stirring in the good way. Ah well, let's pick one at random. The fact that B. didn't go home for two votes.

Who did you miss?
A couple friends I sucked at keeping contact with.

Who was the best new person you met?
Probably the girl who had the shift with me on Tuesdays at the library. And most people I met at the convention. Except the person I couldn't stand, but they didn't ruin my fun at least. XD

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010
Practical sense isn't something you can find in anyone. Politics suck even more than I thought. Also having guts pays off most times.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I have no idea whatsoever.

3b. Total number of completed stories:
87. Lol. But I counted just the ones posted to my LJ and that doesn't include some five acts fic I haven't posted yet and the ones for secret santa exchanges, so I think I got to 100.

Total word count:
... of all the fic posted, 295973. But it doesn't include the said still secret fics which in total are probably some 25000 words, plus the five acts I didn't post, so I'd probably say that I got to 300000.

Overall Thoughts
I don't get how the fuck I managed to write that much, finish a thesis, do all my exams, have a sort-of-social-life and watch all my shows, lol. And I sleep, too. XD Uhm. Seriously? It probably shows I have too much free time in spite of everything (or that I'm good at organizing it), but since I actually like to do I can't bring myself to think it's a bad thing. No but lol, really.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Uhm. Without looking at the count I'd have said I wrote pretty much what I'd predicted, but obviously I did more. O_o

What's your own favorite story of the year?
Uuhm. Okay, it's probably not a very obvious answer, but Down in a hole. Which is future!Castiel/Nirvana!Jack angst crossover stuff but idk why I loved writing it, I loved how it came out, I think I sold the ship and I'm very much satisfied with it.

Did you take any writing risks this year?
Ugh, yes, signing up for six fanfic exchanges at the same time and managing not to drop out of any of them. XD or uhm, well, I started writing some sorta serious kinky-ish porn for the five acts which made me realize I can do half-kinky porn?

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Finish my au_bingo card before February ends. (Probably won't happen but I want to try.) Finish that fic I've been owing [livejournal.com profile] catoasapun for a year (I swear it's coming. I swear! God I feel so bad.) Write more Dark Tower because I miss it, possibly before they make the movies and they possibly fuck it up.

Best & Worst Of

My best story of this year:
Oh god. Objectively? I think These two lanes will take us anywhere for Lost, at least. I just like how it came out and writing Jack/Boone is still my favorite thing. For SPN.. idk. I wrote too much SPN stuff of not-so-small dimensions and I can't judge objectively, lol.

My most popular story of this year:
Okay, first easy answer, Play It All Night Long hands down. Which is actually my most popular story ever since the comments are on page six (??!!!) and I have more at the masterpost. I honestly hadn't thought it'd become -so- popular, but I'm really proud of it and I won't be the one complaining. ;)

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
This one I wrote for the luau which wasn't read at all I think. Which I get because it wasn't even my ship and it probably wasn't that good, but I'd have appreciated if the recipient had at least commented on that.

Most fun story to write:
This probably deserves more than one answer. The fake gay couple from Cincinnati aka the adventures of Titus Welliver and Mark Pellegrino in the world of shows that want to be crossovered was pretty much a blast to write, and I didn't even feel guilty because it was RPS. XD It's a badass afterlife was my first serious Ash POV and I had the time of my life with it. And The family business because you can just have fun while you're writing a vampire porn AU where most characters work in porn movies industry. XD And I should also say Welcome to the wasteland aka the DT/SPN crossover which was an utter blast to write for me. I love writing DT, dammit. I should do it more. Also the bare fact that I was writing Eddie/Dean made me snort if I thought about it. *cough*

Story with the single sexiest moment:
The hottest thing I wrote was in a five acts ficlet I haven't reposted because I can't find a title (sadly), but I will. It consisted of Castiel and Dean doing it in a bathroom stall with Dean wearing pink panties, Castiel keeping a hand on his mouth so not to give them away while he held Dean up with the other and uhm, well, you get it. For the rest.. idk, I feel like I can't isolate a single moment other that the one I described so eloquently. Maybe Alaric cutting Damon in this one. I don't even like bloodplay much but I think that one was good enough for a single sexy moment. XD

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Boone/Charlie/Smokey.

End of story.

... no, wait. There's Impala/Sam's laptop. Either of these, you pick. I don't want to decide which is more wrong. XD

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Unsuffer me, maybe. I didn't have a character epiphany this year, but that one gave me a chance to do some thorough character study on Sam/Cas/Dean respectively and it might have shifted something in my ideas re their characterization.

Hardest story to write:
Through the dead ends and all the bad scenes. I re-wrote it something like five times, I adjusted it to canon every time, I spent a month on it and I still think it could have used more work. Idk what was with that story but HARD.

Biggest Disappointment:
Uhm, I haven't written anything that has disappointed me hard or anything (except for that luau one of which I said above). Probably not finishing some wips, not managing to finish something else I should have done a lot of time ago. Not having written more DT fic even if there isn't even a comm for it.

Biggest Surprise:
Doghouse Roses. I liked the idea myself but I wasn't expecting for it to be in my top five most commented fics of the year, considering the plot. Not that I mind. Actually it made me beyond happy. ;)

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Keep your eyes on the road and your hand upon the wheel maybe. It's not my usual style and I just wrote it down without thinking about it, then upon re-reading it I realized that maybe I had actually done some character study I really liked without realizing it.

4. I read The Vitner's Luck over the holidays. My comments can be summed in, without quoting because atm I don't have the book and if I had to quote I'd re-write it, whoever said that it was Dean/Cas AU fic was... kind of really right. XD okay, seriously, I thought it was pretty great. The writing was lovely and the story was very good too, and the ending would have made me cry if I hadn't been in presence of five other people (and I stopped crying in front of people while reading after my last horrible experience XD), and ohdear Xas is awesome. I'll have to admit that I snorted a fair share of times, but only because of involuntary stuff that reminded me of SPN aka Lucifer/Michael/some dialogue exchanges, but overall I loved it. Now I need to find the sequel, hoping that the copy I ordered from play.com arrives (since the last King book still hasn't showed up..). I predict that I'll be mostly like ;________; thinking about the ending of the first book throughout the entire sequel.

5. The new Clint Eastwood movie was out today. I think I know what I'm doing tomorrow. ♥

6. Last, meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] mollivanders because I'm sure you all want more memes than there are already in this entry. ;)

1. Do not look at the comments.
2. Take a look at my userpics.
3. Post a comment with the icon of mine you associate with me. Leave commentary if desired.
4. Repost with your default icon and profit. [it also saves me from choosing an icon from this post. Yay! Even if my default isn't relevant at all, but whatever, it's Misha. XD]

[identity profile] wandersfound.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
What was your biggest failure?
Having a pretty sorry social life.

Meee too. :|

Josh Ritter! \o/

Holy crap, 300,000 words? That's... wow. I hit about 200,000 and I was shocked.

Biggest Surprise:
Doghouse Roses. I liked the idea myself but I wasn't expecting for it to be in my top five most commented fics of the year, considering the plot. Not that I mind. Actually it made me beyond happy. ;)

I love that fic, js. Definitely one of my favorites of yours.

For the icon meme:

This one, for obvious reasons. But also:

Because whenever I see someone else use it I have to do a doubletake at it not being you. That's true of most of the icons you use that you've made, but especially that one for some reason.

Glad you had a good time in NY! My New Year started out with a cold, but it also started out with me drunk and almost forgetting to wish my best friend Happy New Year because of it, which was funny, so that was good. Plus I spent it with my best friend, so that made it good.

[identity profile] primarycolors92.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)

Because I notice every time I see it!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
At times idk if social life is slightly overrated or not but this was the year I missed having a decent one. :/

Lol you converted me.

And thanks! <33 I didn't think it was bad or anything but I really wasn't expecting two pages of comments on a fic where Dean buys Cas fake flowers. But it's one of my own favorites too so I'll just shut up. ;)

Aww that D/C one is totally one of my favorites. Maybe because finding the coloring took me like one hour. XD ;) <3

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I had, thanks! And aw, good to know yours was good as well. Spending it with friends is always the sanest thing. And I had a cold too I think, so it's two of us? XD

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
FFF THAT MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE LOST ICON EVER. XD It makes me crack up so much.

[identity profile] mollivanders.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This for the meme :) Me? Shallow?

It really sucks when your recipient doesn't bother to comment. If I don't hear back from them in a while I just... send them a PM in good faith that they missed it or something, but yeah. I wrote a Star Trek slash fic last year which was ridiculously hard for me to write and I finally got it out (and it was for one of those charity auctions too) and the girl didn't even comment. angeldylan628 was about the only person keeping me from thinking I was an awful writer and should just give up. I'll check out your story though - I didn't get to read as much fic this year as I wanted and I'm sure it's fantastic :)

I'm not sure how we got so much done either! Congrats dear :)

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ian Somerhalder is my valentine - icon (sorry, at work, can't post pics!)

Vinter's Luck! I love that book and did you know the author is a Kiwi? I don't watch SPN so can't vouch for similarities. The sequel is also good - what's not to love about a gay angel? And the movie, whilst beuatifully made and with gorgeous scenery, was a disappointment as they basically took out all the gayness, which kind of took away half the point as far as I was concerned.

[identity profile] elliotsmelliot.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for new friends, Atwood, haggis, conventions and graduation! With the exception of your Christmas sickness and Italian politics, you had a good year.

The two icons that always remind me of you are The A Team (for the lovely men in your life) and They took my Boy (for you awesome sense of humour)!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL THAT ICON YOU WIN. The problem is that until last year it was true. Now it really isn't because I watch for the real plot too, lololol. Shallow is good though. ;)

Yeah, ikr? I mean, not like that fic is my pairing or anything I write usually but when people don't comment on stuff you do for them is kind of not exactly nice. ;__; and ewww, WHAT, it was also a charity thing? That sucks so hard. :( and thanks! Lol at least someone will give that poor thing a look. XD

<3

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I remember that one well enough. ;)

That book IS awesome! And I didn't know she was from NZ but hey, props to NZ then! And ha, well, in SPN there's an angel with blue eyes named Cas (!) who is in love with one of the two mains (okay, maybe it's platonic and they never SAID it but it's kinda half-canon) and basically behaves 85% like Xas and doesn't have that much of a relationship with either Lucifer or Michael, so the whole thing was kinda involuntarily hilarious at times. But she obviously wrote it before SPN ever aired I think, or for sure before angel guy was even introduced, so it's probably a coincidence. Which doesn't mean that hey - maybe SPN people took from there. I'd like to think it. XD And argh no they took the gayness out?! ... I was thinking I could try to find a download, but if there isn't the gayness I'm not sure I'd want to watch it. :(
Edited 2011-01-07 22:18 (UTC)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed I did! Okay, politics wise it was the most awful, but then again I'm barely surprised at how much Italian politics can get bad. And yay for the yays indeed! I can't complain about that.

That they took my boy one is awesome. And ha, A-Team. Nice choice. Indeed.

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2011-01-08 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Would be funny if SPN did get the idea from there. And yeah, the gayness is basically removed... although there's a bit where Sobran tries to kiss Xas and he turns him away... not nearly good enough, IMO. But do look for the sequel (book), because it is also nicely gay and well done.

There's really no reason why I can't comment on this now. Even though it's kind of late.

87.

I, er - okay. That's good, yes. Very good. (!!!)

As for icons, I want to say the oranges, but I don't want to be obvious. No - wait!

;D

3. you went to scotland? that is so cool! was it pretty?
OMG YOU KISSED MISHA?!?!? *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE*
now i have a stack of fic to read. \o/

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Hi there yourself! ♥

2. Yes I did! Well it was just a weekend and just Edinburgh but I loved it. it was so pretty. And I want to go back sometime soon -nod-.

also 2b LOL YES I DID. I feel proud of myself for having had the guts, but basically it went like: I was at the con, I was about to get my stuff signed, this girl comes from the front of the line squeeing, I ask her what's going on, she said he asked him if she could kiss him and he said yes. So I go, I get my things signed, I hand him the stuff I had brought him and then just before going I'm like 'fuck it, can I kiss you?' and he's like 'sure, go ahead' and uhm, I died. ;) Kind of.

Lol hope you like! ;)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well tangerines -are- orange. ;) And ha, late is no problem!

That's also insane other than good, methinks. ;) And MM THAT ICON I LOVE IT. Obviously. ;)

3. i'd love to visit the uk and europe. so much history :)

FGAKLDHFDK. YOU LUCKY GIRL! *___________*

i'm sure i will :D
