Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Lost S1 Fanmix for <lj site="livejournal.com" user="falafel_musing

I present with my royal apologies my late offering! Blame university crap :/ anyway, I think some fic will come off that prompt, too, but I need to decide what to settle on since I have a few ideas. Meanwhile, please former [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee Queen [livejournal.com profile] falafel_musings, accept my musical take on the S1 ensemble. (Un)fortunately (?) my walkman and Hurley's aren't really on the same wave, some of the choices were done for pure crack value and there isn't Arzt or Ethan... but there's Rose AND Vincent! ;) I'll explain everything under the cut anyway so don't fear.

1. Shambala - Three Dog Night [Hurley]

Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind
On the road to Shambala
Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind
On the road to Shambala

How does your light shine, in the halls of Shambala?

I do realize that it isn't the most original choice but alas, as I said, me and Hurley's walkman aren't really on the same length so I couldn't choose anything more suited to his taste. And if I hear this song I think HURLEY!!, so..

2. With A Little Help From My Friends - The Beatles [Charlie]

What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)
No, I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
I'm gonna to try with a little help from my friends

Well, he does have a Beatles tattoo, but that would have been obvious ;) I think this one just feels very much like S1 Charlie, especially in relation to Claire and whatnot. And it's a positive song and well, come on, he was positive.

3. Respect - Aretha Franklin [Rose]

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take care, TCB

Okay, this is the first (with the following one) done just for pure crack value but well, come on. As soon as I had the mental image I had to put it even if the lyrics aren't very Rose-ish, or at least not as the image of Rose singing is. If I make sense.

4. Delilah - Queen [Vincent]

Oh my oh my oh my you're unpredictable
You make me so very happy
When you cuddle up and go to sleep beside me
And then you make me slightly mad
When you pee all over my Chippendale suite

You take over my house and home
You even try to answer my telephone
Delilah you're the apple of my eye

Pure crack value #2. Riiiight, this is about a cat, but let's overlook just that little peeve of no importance. As long as you put a dog instead of a cat isn't it just Vincent? No? *hides*

5. About a Boy - Patti Smith [Walt]

about a boy
beyond it all
about a boy
beyond it all

I stood among them
I stood alone
boy boy
just a boy
just a little boy
just a little boy
who will never grow

Uhm, this one just said Walt to me. Even if he was already grown, but well, she talks in metaphors.

6. Hollow Years - Dream Theater [Micheal]

Carry me to the shoreline
Bury me in the sand
Walk me across the water
And maybe you'll understand

Once the stone
You're crawling under
Is lifted off your shoulders
Once the cloud that's raining
Over your head disappears
The noise that you'll hear
Is the crashing down of hollow years

Usually I kind of hate Dream Theater, but this is the only song of theirs I really like, maybe because it's not their style at all, it has a lovely music and I was desperate for finding Mike a song. The beginning actually may seem off but those two verses seemed good for me.

7. Accidentally Like a Martyr - Warren Zevon [Jin]

The days slide by
Should have done, should have done, we all sigh
Never thought I'd ever be so lonely
After such a long, long time
Time out of mind

We made mad love
Shadow love
Random love
And abandoned love
Accidentally like a martyr
The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder

This would be more or less In Translation time. Or that's how I see it.

8. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - John Mayer [Sun]

We're goin down
And you can see it too
We're goin down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear
We're slow dancing in a burnin room

This is such an elegant song. And I think it's very S1 Sun-ish.

9. Janie's Got a Gun - Aerosmith [Kate]

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her whole world's come undone
From lookin' straight at the sun
What did her daddy do?
What did he put you through?
They said when Janie was arrested
they found him underneath a train
But man, he had it comin'
Now that Janie's got a gun
she ain't never gonna be the same

Run away, run away from the pain yeah yeah

Erm. I wanted to put Run Baby Run, but it wasn't that fitting after all and then I remembered this one. Leave out my lovely nickname, put a Katie in it, figure that it's starting a fire instead of firing a gun and that's sort of it. Right, might be a crack-ish choice but not that much ;)

10. Nothing Else Matters - Metallica [Claire]

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us, something new
Open mind for a different view
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they say
never cared for games they play
never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
and I know

I'm not too big on Metallica myself, but I wanted to give Claire hardcore taste because she was and it's the most hardcore I can get. Also, I think it's fitting.

11. Just Like a Woman - Charlotte Gainsbourg [Shannon]

Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Ev'rybody knows
That Baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

Now, this song just screams Shannon to me. But this isn't the Dylan version, for how much I love it. This one is from the I'm Not There soundtrack and it's Charlotte Gainsbourg singing it and do I love it. She has such a delicate voice and a bit of that lovely French accent that makes it even more suited ;)

12. My Back Pages - Bob Dylan [Sayid]

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now

This has always been my default Sayid song. First one I choose ;)

13. God's Gonna Cut You Down - Johnny Cash [Sawyer]

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Right, I'm not wrong if I think S1 Sawyer as soon as I hear this?

14. Adam Raised a Cain - Bruce Springsteen [Jack]

In the summer that I was baptized,
My father held me to his side,
As they put me to the water,
He said how on that day I cried.
We were prisoners of love, a love in chains,
He was standin' in the door, I was standin' in the rain,
with the same hot blood burning in our veins,
Adam raised a Cain

If you thought you were going to escape the ritual Springsteen song you were SO wrong ;) uhm, well, this one is IMHO the best song ever written regarding father/son conflicting relationships with another one of Bruce's which is Independence Day. But this one is way angrier and well, it's beautiful, period.

15. Two - Ryan Adams [Boone]

And i'm fractured from the fall
And i wanna go home
But it takes two when it used to take one
It takes two when it used to take only one
Well, my money's no good when i'm up to no good
No good ever comes from it, honest
I got a really good heart
I just can't catch a break
If i could i'd treat you like you wanted me to i promise
But i'm fractured from the fall
And i wanna go home

I don't think I need to explain why this one was just perfect. Do I? ♥

16. The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson [Locke]

On soft gray mornings widows cry
The wise men share a joke;
I run to grasp divining signs
To satisfy the hoax.
The yellow jester does not play
But gentle pulls the strings
And smiles as the puppets dance
In the court of the crimson king.

I chose this one for pretty much one reason, which would be that it's the most crazy song I ever heard my whole life. In the good sense of the word, surely, even if progressive rock isn't exactly my favorite cup of tea. But it's crazy, weird and creepy so fine for Locke I guess. Also, this court looks totally like the island to me ;)

17. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young

Everybody seems to wonder
What it's like down here
I gotta get away
from this day-to-day
running around,
Everybody knows
this is nowhere.

Everybody, everybody knows
Everybody knows.

And for a closure, one of my favorite Neil Young songs, a sure lighter note than King Crimson and well, the title was just perfect.

*phew* Done! *lays at the Queen's feet*

YES. I love fanmixes and this looks amazing. The artwork is so pretty. Snagged the .rar file, thanks. :)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're much welcome, glad you liked it! Woah, I can't believe I'm done with it. I mean, next time I'm doing twelve songs ;)

[identity profile] falafel-musings.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh WOW, Janie! This was beyond my expectations. It's gorgeous. I'm soooo listening to the songs I don't know. The lyrics are perfectly chosen and you have picked some lovely pictures too. Aww! I love the S1 line up so much. Okay, I miss Desmond, but aside from that absense S1 has the best cast.

I love that you gave Rose and Vincent songs too! That is just spoiling me. Don't worry about Ethan and Arzt. I don't think they would have fit so well. Some of my favourite choices were the Cash song for Sawyer and the Beatles song for Charlie because it made me think of wolffootballs vids right away. I also loved the choices of Patti Smith for Walt (oddly perfect) Metallica for Claire (yay for her heavy metal roots!) and Dylan for Sayid. Locke (with his orange) as the crimson king and that Neil Young song was the perfect way to finish.

I'm sooo thrilled. Gonna listen this afternoon while I'm working. Thanks so much! Fic too? I really am spoiled. Don't worry about lateness. I don't know how anyone can keep up with this Luau!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! I actually didn't plan on a Vincent song but as soon as I remembered that Freddie Mercury wrote songs about his cats I couldn't refrain. He wouldn't mind, I think!

Same thing about the S1 line-up. If they just opened that hatch.... *shakes head*

Ethan is a character that I just can't seem to channel and yeah, he wouldn't have fit. Arzt makes me headdesk. I tried but I couldn't find anything *eyes him badly*. Locke is totally a Crimson King adept, isn't he?

Well, I have this idea of a gigantic game of I Never played between all of them but I need to sort the thing out in my head and I don't know how long will it take, so I went with this first. Yeah, keeping up is crazy indeed! And thanks, I'm so glad you liked it indeed! ;)

[identity profile] falafel-musings.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same thing about the S1 line-up. If they just opened that hatch.... *shakes head*

Yeah, if only the damn trebuchet (err, I can't spell it either!) had worked. Then we'd have had Desmond in S1 and Boone wouldn't have needed to die. Sigh...

Well, I have this idea of a gigantic game of I Never played between all of them

OMG! Great bunny. You have the best crack ideas. That could turn out to be hilarious especially if Sawyer is the master of ceromonies. Take your time, but please write this! I dread to think what secrets might come out...

I'll comment again after listening to the mix!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, I'll be waiting for it!

Oh, I'm so definitely writing that. I sort of have my list of thirty questions or so that would come out but I need to decide how to structure the thing otherwise it'd become a mess. But I agree, it's too good of a bunny to let it waste and Sawyer would soo be the evil mastermind behind the whole thing.

God, that thing. I'll always hate it for not working. Or if someone just took a walk and found the back hatch door. *shakes head* S1 Desmond would have made my life or something.

Grazie! Vero che ci sta da dio?

La prossima cosa che farò sarà riscrivere i Blues Brothers con lei al posto della Franklin... ;)

[identity profile] bitterbird.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
aww wow what an awesome collection!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Oh, I love fanmixes, I do. ♥

[identity profile] invisiblelove.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, this is gorgeous! Awesome work on the song choices and art :)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, glad you liked this!

[identity profile] lenina20.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so downloading each and everyone one of those! The whole thing - this is so amazing. So perfect. So wonderful.

I love the art - of course - and all the work you've done with the music. I love how fitting and how simply gorgeous they all are. Thank you. Thank you so so much for making this! Loved it!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You flatter me way too much and my ego loves you for it ;) thank you so much, I'm really glad you liked this and the art! I also hope you liked the music ;) and I owe you some Spanish music reccing *headdesk* but know, I loved pretty much all of it ;)

[identity profile] helena-s.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I grabed it all - it´s in my desktop, hope you don´t mind?
The way you connected lyrics with the images - that´s genius and must have costed you a lot of time to find the right ones. Thank you very much for all the work and loveliness! **Bows deeply before your sensitivity and encyclopedical musical knowledge** :)
I always thought of Johnny Cash in connection with Sawyer, but my song for him was Desperado. But you´re right, this one makes a lot of sense.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure I don't! Grab away as you like, I'm all the more flattered ;)

Thank you so much, I'm really glad you liked the whole package! Actually the pictures didn't take much but just because I know my way around to a couple of colorings ;) and now I'm blushing. Really. And it's not encyclopedical, it's obsessive ;)

Johnny Cash is so Sawyer. My first choice for him is actually Springsteen to be honest but I had already given him to Jack so I went with my second best. Desperado is excellent for Sawyer, indeed!

[identity profile] alemyrddin.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
my god. I'm amazed at your musical knowledge so vast and varied, and how skillfully and fast you put this together! *applauds*

I don't know if I'll ever have time to listen to it, but I really hope so!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's obsession. But as long as we speak music I become some very fast thing ;) I'm really glad you liked the package! And I sure hope you'll manage to give some of this a listen ♥.

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, this is an EXCELLENT mix! I love the song choices for Hurley, Charlie, Kate and Sawyer especially. And the cover art is beautiful! Downloading the zip right away. =D

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much, I'm really so glad you liked it! LOL I thought people were going to tell me I was completely crazy with that song for Kate but hey, it's her! ;) thanks again!

[identity profile] falafel-musings.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Squee! Listened to the playlist. It was a great collection. I loved loved loved that version of 'Just like a woman'. You're right, it's much more fitting for Shannon. I also liked the songs you picked for Mike and Jin which I hadn't heard before. Hurleys and Charlies opening songs are great feel good openers. And Neil Young is always a good way to finish a compilation.

Thanks again!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's definitely great to hear! That Just Like a Woman version is a killer. That movie has some of the most beautiful Dylan covers in the universe but that one is probably my favorite and it suits her so much. Mike's song is actually the only DT song I'll ever like my whole life probably but I really DO like it ;) while Jin's is one of my favorite artists overall so I'm really glad you liked those. And one totally has to open with happy songs and close with Neil Young ;) again, glad you liked this! ♥

[identity profile] novalee17.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
woaaah, you're awesome! totally downloading the zip file, thank you! :D

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I'm really glad you appreciate! ;)

[identity profile] mrslinus17.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, the good ol' S1 days. You're so good at fanmixes!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally, don't we all miss them? Thank you, glad you liked it!

Fantastic work!! Love it, and snagging!! :)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much, hope you enjoy the S1 madness! ;)

[identity profile] glycerineclown.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sunny out and you have no idea how happy Shambala makes me. :)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
That definitely makes me happy to hear! ;)

[identity profile] zelda-zee.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
What fun! I look forward to listening! The songs on this that I know seem so well-suited to the characters you chose for them.

Also, wow, gorgeous graphics! So impressive! I adore them! Did you enhance the color? They're so bright and clear.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just went for enhancing the color and sharpen the things sometimes, but I figured it was better to keep it simple ;) thanks, I'm really glad you liked them! I hope you enjoy the other songs as well, I totally get a kick out of making fanmixes so it's great to hear it works! ♥

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Cool artwork, and you've found some great songs there! I've only nabbed the one for now, because I love Warren Zevon ♥, and I can't d/l the whole file (last time I tried to unzip a rar, it totally failed :-( ). Will see if I can find room for more soon. Thanks! (does the cover art actually come out at cd size somehow if you print it? *is a geek in such the wrong way*

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! YAY, you like Zevon? That's just so cool! He's one of my favorite artists but alas, I can't find much people knowing him and it's a shame *sigh*. Uhm, I took the cover size from one that I had in a torrent which was supposed to be cd-size while printed so it might, but I wouldn't have an idea ;)

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
WOO! I adore Zevon and I've mostly only got him on vinyl, so I'm hanging out for any I find via people on the net. I really must buy a cd of his one day!

I'm intrigued by all the artwork people do with their soundtracks cos I have no idea how to make it cd size or anything - I'm assuming that's the intent, should you want it on a cd cover? *is clueless about mp3 players etc*

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, I think the intent is that but I've seen some 300x300 covers which isn't obviously enough *shrugs* I think 500x550 should be a good one, or anyway big enough to shrink it without losing quality.

Well, I've got pretty much all of Zevon's discography between cds and internet stuff so if you need something particular.. ;) also, there's this site (http://www.archive.org/details/WarrenZevon) that has a lot of his concert up for free grabs with his son's benevolence if it can be of help ;)

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the link! I've bookmarked it and will check it out some time! As for the thought of d/l-ing some songs from you - wow! It's too hard to think on what I'd like right now and I can't manage rar extensions, so I'll have a think on it and let you know! Thanks so much for the offer though - I really appreciate it! I'm just thinking with my inability on the technology front it'd be a lot easier to buy some CD's! HA!

The artwork, btw, is great - I just wish I could figure out how to d/l some of these things properly, then I could appreciate it so much more. ;-)

PS: I took the Beatles in the end, and will probably leave the rest as I don't know any of the other songs, and I prefer not to d/l too much I don't know, as it's hard to find time to listen in my busy house! Thank again! ;-)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I could upload separately ;) anyway, offer's always valid! And that site is the most awesome thing ever existed. Especially because it's for grabs and for free ;)

[identity profile] slybrunette.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I got to say the coverart is what got me here and I've got to say that is THE BEST coverart for a mix that i have ever seen.

Great songs, fitting choices, wonderful job!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, thank you so much, I'm really glad you liked it! It was kind of a Chinese boxes thing to do but I'm quite satisfied with how it came out. Thanks again!

[identity profile] elliotsmelliot.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
What a great idea! I loved the art you chose for each character's pic and song. All that's missing is a hidden Desmond track!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! Yeah, that's missing and that's a shame *flags herself*, but I'll make it up to him soon ;)
