random bunch of things + tv, tv, tv
1. Exam two on five is done! Now if I can just keep up the average that I managed to get this round I'll be a happy person. Other than that, it has snowed for the first time in years! Like, seriously snowed with the snow lasting for three days. And obviously since our mayor is an idiot, the city is half-paralyzed and today they closed everything even if it has snowed on Friday. And obviously public transport isn't working either. *facepalm*
2. And since this weekend I stayed holed up to finish an exchange fic that ended up being 28k and I didn't manage to do reaction posts, have some TV blathering under the cuts. SPN, vampire porn, Luck and some Ringer headdesking.
a) Ringer 1x10/11(getting the crappy stuff out of the way first): okay, this isn't gonna need spoiler cuts because I can't even take it seriously enough, but I can't wait for Misha to do that episode so I can quit watching it. The last two episodes were... the epitome of abysmal. I mean, my most basic reaction is is everyone in this show completely dumb?, and the fact that the only person who showed some smarts lately is the bff's husband says all. Also I can't possibly be the only one who's totally squicked out by the fact that Bridget is SLEEPING with her sister's husband WHEN HE THINKS SHE'S ANOTHER PERSON, right? Idk the few reactions I read don't mention it at all and I guess I'm supposed to root for them, but what the - seriously? Not to mention that if I cared about this I'd have a million issues with how they're dealing with the Juliet-and-her-teacher storyline, but this show's point has never been being sensible I guess. Sigh. the only good thing about this still remain Nestor Carbonell's eyelashes.
b) Luck: no spoiler cuts since this is just general impression, but is anyone else watching this? Horse races/betting isn't really my thing but since a) it's David Milch's idea, b) Dustin Hoffmann is in it c) Michael Mann directed the pilot I figured I'd give it a try. I thought it was pretty good even if it's not at the awesome level that Deadwood was (at least at the pilot level) and in the only episode I watched it was all about characters, but the second looked more fast-paced and the acting is actually excellent, so I guess I'll stick around and give it a chance. Heck, I still haven't quit Ringer and that one is just bad, this one actually has good premises...
c) SPN 7x13 Okay so, the best thing about this was Dean having sex with Aunt Jenna who somehow came back from the dead and who also was pretty in charge... ;) nah seriously apart from the OMG INVOLUNTARY CROSSOVER BE RIGHT BACK LAUGHING factor and apart from FINALLY DEAN IS TAKING HIS SHIRT OFF FACTOR it was a lot better than I had thought by reading the synopsis. (Seriously, CW, hire someone else because your summaries are crap.) Random observations:
+ So apparently Bobby stuck around? Even if they salted and burned the body? This is going to end bad, I know, but... the idea that Bobby went as far as becoming a ghost just to keep an eye on those two idiots makes me want to shed the odd tear.
+ Dean needs to find an AA place now. Really. At least Sam is driving the car.
+ Sam was rightfully pissed also - even if in Dean's half-defense, the kid still hadn't killed anyone. Still, this isn't Dean's year - first everyone he gives a shit about except Sam dies and then that? And that said I'm glad the amazons made it - I wasn't looking forward to another bloodbath formed of mostly women. *cough* Even if these ones were totally creepy, ew.
+ Dean didn't deny that Cas dying fucked him up. Thanks Sam for pointing that out. (yes, I'm not quitting with the Cas thing until he's back - deal with it.)
+ The Sam/Dean interaction was very good tho. And the pacing was as well, and the subject was dealt a lot better than I thought so this one passes the exam. Now if only next week's didn't have the worst title they could have come up with...
+ That said, thanks PTB for giving us some shirtless Dean. Really.
+ ... who had sex with Aunt Jenna. PPFFFF. Someone just write VD/SPN crossovers where Dean hooks up with the REAL Aunt Jenna plz, that woman would have appreciated a lot methinks. ;)
d) Vampire porn 3x13 ... I give up, this is the show I'm enjoying most right now. Shoot me. When you think 'why couldn't show X just do like the vampire porn' there might be a problem, but.
+ ELIJAH! :DDDD HE'S BACK! AND HE'S NOT AN IDIOT! AND HE TEAMED UP WITH DAMON!
+ people. ORIGINALS. ANDELOISE FROM LOST KLAUS'S MOM WAS IN THE COFFIN. AND NOW THEY'RE ALL TOGETHER AGAIN OMGGGG. Can I just hope the mom takes charge? Bc if she can keep Klaus under a leash I'm all for it and the others, lolol. Elijah stay forever. And Rebekah stay forever around to bitchslap your brother. Also the other two guys in the coffins looked plenty nice to look at.
+ Dear show, can you stop killing Alaric and give me a heart attacks, not to mention to give Elena stuff to talk about when she finally talks to a shrink? Seriously that part killed me. Someone just tell Damon to stick around to give Ric his blood or whatever, REALLY. Also who the fuck is behind this entire thing? Ah well, if I know them we'll learn next week and not in the finale...
+ Stefan is still in love with Elena. HI, SHIP, STAY VALIDATED.
+ Bonnie & her mom are awesome.
+ .... Caroline's dad dying was a bummer, but I couldn't see THAT guy becoming a vampire anytime soon. And oh god Caroline STOP MAKING ME WANT TO CRY.
+ Am I wrong or Matt and Elena are.. mmh, well, rekindling old flames? Not that since it's Klaus's plan it'd bring anything good, but honestly Matt would be the safest choice atm...
+ And that said, Damon Salvatore please stay awesome forever. His faces during the dinner party. AND WHEN HE HAD THAT CONVERSATION WITH STEFAN. Ugh Damon/Stefan you have a relationship that is a thing of very twisted beauty.
+ In conclusion, this show isn't disappointing me anytime soon. Thank you, show. Stay awesome forever and just keep on being the lovely vampire porn that you are, thanks, me.
3) Also, in the midst of all the Plato I had to read I managed to finish this non-ASOIAF novel by GRRM which I think deserves a bit of a rec if only because it's.. well, an interesting read at least. Or well, I bought it mostly because when you tell me that it's a novel about a former rock journalist turned writer who lives wondering where his generation went wrong in the seventies and ends up investigating a murder that is related to some cursed rock band named NAZGUL and which could be the trigger for the apocalypse... well, color me intrigued.
Aaand... it was actually good. I mean, from the plot it could have been either a total wreck or it might WORK in spite of it, and it did. The plot was actually really well done, the pacing was excellent and it had characters that really popped off the page, not to mention that most of my favorite groups/songs/albums ended up being mentioned in conversations all the goddamn time. And I'll give it to GRRM - he's good. The Nazgul were obviously fictional, but from the way he incorporated them in the story I was almost tempted to google them to see if I could buy their record. I mean, when he went describing concerts/songs/music that didn't exist you really got into it. And the whole supernatural/apocalyptic element isn't... well, overdone. You have to buy it, obviously, but if you do the entire thing is actually pretty damn awesome.
The best part of it though is.. well, while the protagonist is around searching for info about the murder triggering the whole thing he ends up visiting all his college friends, who all were thinking they could change the world along with him in the sixties and ended up doing entirely different things in the seventies, and there's a bunch of reflecting about 60s/70s counterculture, and what rock music meant for it, and all the reasons why and how that generation failed at what they thought they could do which was so very well done and it was seriously moving at most times. And while said friends do fill your usual cliches for the genre (like, there's the guy who used to be into politics, one who ran to Canada instead of going to Vietnam, one that becomes a college professor that no one hires for long, the one who ended up in a hippie commune etc etc.) they're all so very intriguing and well-written. Tldr, GRRM totally surprised me positively.
Also, for the ASOIAF people who might have a laugh out of it: I can't help thinking that when he started doing ASOIAF he remembered this one, since the protagonist is named Sander (at least half of his face isn't burned) but personality-wise he's kind of like ASOS Jaime (or well I think that if Jaime was a burned-out rock journalist he'd kind of be like him), and his first girlfriend during college is a girl with blonde hair, kind of tall, with a nose that seems broken and plump lips (reminds you of anyone). Also the family of the friend who didn't go to Vietnam is basically the Greyjoys (and the guy's storyline is.. well, he and Theon share a couple of things). I'm half-sure that if I thought harder about everyone else I'd have probably recognized some other similarities but after the last one I tried not to think too much about it. Anyway, I totally had a crack out of it.
4. Also, I managed to see J. Edgar obviously months after the rest of the world saw it and apart from some questionable choices in make-up department... Clint Eastwood, just never stop making movies okay. Clearly it got Oscar-snubbed too (seriously, poor Leo deserved a nomination at least), but whatever, I loved it. ♥
5. Random music rec for Bob Dylan fans (and well, look at the list and see if there's someone you like): Amnesty International has produced this OMG SO MANY SONGS compilation thing named Chimes of Freedom where.. well, a bunch of people cover Bob Dylan songs and that you can buy on their site for a total convenient price (20 dollars for all 78 songs, 25 dollars for the cd or you can buy individual mp3s). Apart from being for a good cause.. well, while there's something in there that is questionable at best (I still don't know how I feel aboutMiley Cyrus or about Kesha covering Don't Think Twice, It's All Right...) there are some damn awesome covers (IE: Patti Smith doing Drifter's Escape, Gaslight Anthem doing Changing of the Guards, Mark Knopfler doing Restless Farewell, Flogging Molly doing The Times, They're a Changin' & Pete Seeger doing Forever Young, and there are also the likes of Jackson Browne, Nils Lofgren AND Paul Rodgers [which sent me into heaven], Lucinda Williams, Kris Kristofferson and Steve Earle; also I think there are a couple new groups I want to check out just based on how they did Hattie Carroll) and it really is a bargain, so I figured I'd leave the link here. Also all the money goes for a good cause, so..
6. Okay, I'll now go deleting all the spam comments that LJ has seen fit to send my way lately (if they want me to be frustrated with them, they're doing it right...) and amusing myself with the porn battle prompts for this round that I have eyed today. There's been some awesome stuff posted already. :D *goes eyeing prompts*

But I also think Sam was freaking out more because he was upset, and was sorta just...letting his upset flow over than actually upset about THAT.
no subject
But yeah that too. I mean he was generally upset I think. Still, if he was still pissed about Amy he kind of had all the rights, but then again I still think that the Amy thing was handled like crap. ;)
no subject
But yeah, that whole thing was very...wut.
no subject
This is a must get for me! Thanks for letting me know about this album. I'm not a fan of the Shelter from the Storm cover by Ed Roland.
The subject of Luck does not interest me, even though the pedigree is so good. I'll keep my eye of reactions for now, and possibly check it out when I am out of shows.
Sigh. the only good thing about this still remain Nestor Carbonell's eyelashes.
Heh. They need their own show!
no subject
I don't really care for horse races at all either, but considering that since Boardwalk is gone and Game of Thrones is months away and I need my quality HBO time I'll stick with it a bit and see if it draws me in. I mean, after honestly trying Ringer for a month (and then I stuck just for the eyelashes) it can't be wasted time. ;)
They need their own show!
I swear, forty minutes of Nestor looking at himself in a mirror would make a much more compelling show.. ;)

Don't worry. You're not the only one. Consent issues much? :S
In fact... this entire show feels like one massive mess of consent issues, the more I think about it. Juliet and her teacher... I wish the writers had just never gone there. This show is not adequately prepared to give that kind of trauma the attention it deserves, and it's just thrown in a massive trigger for many of the women who might have been enjoying watching this show, and are now going to have to deal with that storyline if they wish to keep watching.
Also, if at any point it comes out that Juliet's lying to get back at her teacher (which I don't buy, but others on the interwebz seem to), I'm going to find the writers and bang their heads together, because that is the last message that needs to be given on a mainstream show like this.
/rant
As for SPN... don't worry. I'm not quitting with the Cas thing, either. It may not make us all that popular in the rest of fandom, but I'm a Cas girl through and through, and the end of season six/beginning of season seven still make me want to bang my head against a wall. I want our angel back. :(
no subject
I wish the writers had just never gone there. This show is not adequately prepared to give that kind of trauma the attention it deserves
THIS. There's no way this is going to turn out good any way it goes. I don't think that she's lying either, mostly because if she was lying to get back at him why would have she kept it secret? I mean she'd have spilled a lot sooner if it was the case (or at least that seems logical, but with this show you can't expect logic I guess..). If the guy really did rape her it's even worse because.. well, since this show it's about Bridget no one is gonna sit down and like, talk sensibly about it, and obviously when Briget slapped the guy (aka only smart thing she's done in a long while) Juliet is obviously just angry that she had to go and do it. Let's pass the message that if your teacher rapes you you'd better keep quiet, mmmh? (not to mention that no one thought once that he could do it again with other people.) And let's not go into the other subliminal message that sending your daughter to public school is going to get her raped. Just. Okay, I'm in there for the eyelashes after all, what do I even get worked up about since this show is just not the right place for serious things.
/Rant ;)
I want him back too. :((( I just.. I really, really, REALLY miss his face. ;___; and who cares what the rest of the fandom thinks. ;)
no subject
tbh the only reason I didn't quit it at episode seven was that I heard about Misha being on it so I figured I could just do it until his episode.
Yeah. See, I actually found myself starting to enjoy aspects of the show - at least more than I did at the beginning, when it was just goddamn ridiculous - but I think that's more cause I'm holding out for Bridget to get caught. Because the life she's living now is absolutely so many shades of not okay, and I feel bad for her, what with crazy killer guy on her tail - but what she's doing is so far from okay, and I'm still holding out for the episode when everything's revealed and shit goes crazy.
There's no way this is going to turn out good any way it goes.
There really isn't. Amen to all you said. And I think they were right to make her reluctant to say anything to begin with - because, unfortunately, that's what happens in so many rape cases - but if that had kept going, and she had ended up legit not saying anything by the end of the last episode, I would have had an absolute shit fit. And at least her friend was there being the voice of reason at the beginning, i.e. OH MY GOD TELL SOMEONE. And yeah - good on Bridget for punching the guy.
But for the whole plot arc in general... you're right. The show is about Bridget. And Juliet's arc - which could be an entire damn show in itself, with all the shit she's gonna have to deal with now - is never going to get the attention it deserves.
And let's not go into the other subliminal message that sending your daughter to public school is going to get her raped.
That, too. So not okay.
As for Castiel... I'm terrified for episode 17. Because while it would be hard to find an even worse ending for him than the one he already got, somehow I fell like the SPN Powers That Be could find a way. -_- I want him back, so much it physically hurt, but I'm absolutely emotionally defenseless when it comes to his character, and I'm just terrified we're going to be put through the ringer again, even worse than before.
and who cares what the rest of the fandom thinks. ;)
Argh. The Cas hate is ridiculous. I hate how this fandom splits so in half. I honestly just made a post on tumblr - with a link to the couples poll that Dean/Castiel is part of - and I was like, "Look, I don't care who you ship, be it Wincest or Destiel or Wincestiel or absolutely nobody at all - s'all good. But if you're queer-friendly and part of fandom, help us Destiel shippers win?" Also, the fact that Matt Cohen re-tweeted said link on twitter made my life. I love this cast. ♥
no subject
To clarify: the fact that Juliet still wishes nobody knew - and that she blames herself, and wishes that Bridget hadn't punched the guy - really, really, reeeeally needs to be addressed. And needs to be addressed in a way that does justice to what she's been through. Because her being ashamed of what happened is exactly the wrong message to send, and if that doesn't change, then I'm soon going to find myself clawing at the computer screen.
However, that being said, this show probably won't deal with this decently, at all. -_-

And needs to be addressed in a way that does justice to what she's been through. Because her being ashamed of what happened is exactly the wrong message to send, and if that doesn't change, then I'm soon going to find myself clawing at the computer screen.
THIS EXACTLY. (More on that on the comment I'm about to write in response to the one up here, but yes. this.) I've rarely managed to see anything on tv that dealt with rape in ways that I could get behind, but if they're going to just push this under a rug I'll scream. And quit it the second Misha does his job. ://
no subject
I've been waiting for Bridget to get caught too but by now.. I mean, half the reason why I think that this show is ridiculous is that NO ONE HAS CAUGHT HER YET or NO ONE EVER SUSPECTED THAT SHE ISN'T SIOBHAN when errrrrr I mean, suspension of disbelief and everything, but with all the clues she had left around I can't believe that no one got there on their own except for one person X_X
Nah having her not wanting to tell was okay - since that's (sadly) how it usually goes, fine. But if it ends with Juliet keeping on thinking that Bridget did a stupid thing decking the guy/thinking that it's her fault/not pressing charges/the likes it's going to give out all the possible wrong messages ever. Not to mention that geez I don't really -like- anyone in this show except Eyelashes and Juliet mostly makes me want to headdesk most of the time (like, when she complained about daddy freezing her two million bank account I was about to cry while asking myself 'why do I even care'), but crap you put her through something like THAT, then I want to see the repercussions. But this is about crazy twin shenigans, not serious things like teachers raping their students =_= bleah. After it's done I'll just go re-watch Six Feet Under just to remind myself that some people do know how to handle that subject.
Same re Cas. I mean, I'm already thinking that it might be the one time in ten years when I get colossally drunk if they waste him all over again X___X I can only hope that Ben Edlund is behind it. In case I'm fine. I just - DON'T TAKE HIM AWAY AGAIN TERRIBLY OKAY I CAN'T DEAL WITH IT. .... yeah, emotionally invested as well - go us?
... but AWWWWWWWWWWWW MATT COHEN <3333 I LOVE THAT MAN AND THAT CAST. and ugh I just don't get why half of fandom has to think that you can't like Cas. (Okay, that you can't rightfully be pissed. Really, if he had died a WORTHY death, ie Bobby, I might have dealt with it - I can disagree with killing him but the way they handled it was objectively worth of the character - Cas's, for a supposed death, was just the most ridiculous thing since my favorite character in Heroes, which maybe was worse but same level. Blame me if I'd like him to die decently, if he has to.) Can't we just.. like what we like in peace? :( ah well. Let's hope for the best y/y? Heck, if Dean hugs him I'll just disregard all the rest.

OMG I NEED THAT DYLAN COVER ALBUM
That GRRM book sounds awesome - I might need that, also.
no subject
YES YOU DO IT'S VERY VERY GOOD.
The GRRM book is.. very awesome indeed. I wouldn't have thought that such a plot could have worked in a million years but it totally does. ;)

Agreed that the best thing about SPN 7x13 was the shirtless Dean, lol. That's pretty much the best thing always. I did like the ep overall though. And, I caught the Cas mention too and thought the same thing! So yay for that. I mean, Dean obviously had a lot piling up even before Cas died, but that was definitely one of the big catalysts to getting him as despondent as he is now. It's pretty hard to argue against that, so.
And, for the record, I think it's perfectly ok to miss Cas (I sure do). Some fans take that too far, but I've never thought you were one of those.
(I tried to edit this comment right after I posted but my computer was freaking out, lol - just fyi!)

Shirtless Dean was totally enough to grant it the pass. ;) he should take it off a bit more often *cough* but yeah it wasn't a bad ep by any means. And I liked that they threw in the Cas mention - at least we get that! And phe good to know I'm not taking the Cas thing to insane levels, but.. I really miss him. ♥ (though if you're my favorite and last three seasons you have a record, since most people I like bite it before then.. ah well, episode 17 I happily wait for you. ;) )

Missing Cas is TOTALLY fine, IMO. I know a lot of people don't but a lot of people DO, and I think that's fine. 717 - I cannot WAIT! :)

I can't wait either! And now that Misha is tweeting us spoilers I can't wait even more.. ;)

He played Klaus and didn't trust him and never even considered going back to Klaus' side and it was GLORIOUS. I have been waiting all season for someone to wake all the Originals and for them to gang up on Klaus.
I think Mommy is going to be the new big bad, though.

IT WAS SO GLORIOUS WASN'T IT? OH MY GOD. :DDDDDDDDDDDD and haha yeah Kalus needs to be ganged up. And yeah Mommy doesn'exactly give me a nice vibe but if she keeps Klaus under control I'll have a lot of fun...
