In the end I'm staying here for New Year's. Apart from the infamous fever, I caught a cold, I don't feel fine and up there it snows and I just don't feel like I should push my luck too much. Sucks because I really wanted to go, damn. And after two months I'm getting way tired of this rubbish. *sigh* However, I need to lighten up the mood. Memes!

01. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Written a novel? Fine, it was a fanfic novel but still.

02. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make them. I did once and I never kept them so what's the point?

03. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.

04. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, but someone close to a friend of mine, not exactly to me.

05. What countries did you visit?
Spain.

06. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
Uhm, discipline? For a lot of things. I lack discipline. I'm lazy, damn.

07. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory?
25th of June, of course. Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band baby! ;) And the week from August 10th to 17th which I spent in a delightful immersion in Rossini opera. Mm. I love Rossini.

08. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Passing the exams I had to pass I figure.

09. What was your biggest failure?
Erm, ha, nice. I failed in a lot of stuff but I probably should have worked harder on keeping contacts with some people and I didn't. I hope next year is not too late to do it.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I'm running a fever since November 2nd, I figure yes. *sigh*

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Probably my copy of Kavalier And Clay. The Springsteen ticket doesn't count because I had it since December.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Ouch, probably my professor of ancient philosophy. Because he was awesome, he always was on time for exams and was the only one who actually did a serious exam. No, it isn't a given. And a couple of people I know but I wouldn't go into details.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
A friend of mine who I haven't managed to hear from for some time and who as far as I know is seriously screwing things up.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Music and books. Especially music.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE ESB! STEVE EARLE'S CONCERT IN MAY! ;) Oh, and of course the opera week.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2008?
You're Still Standing There by Steve Earle (and Lucinda Williams). Shoot me, I'm not original and I've sickened everyone with that song but it was just love at the first two notes. Well, maybe also I Lost It by Lucinda Williams. Oh, right, and Return of the Grievous Angel originally by Gram Parsons in any version. Why, I discovered country music!

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
1. happier or sadder? Probably happier but a tad more worried about some things I'd rather not worry about. See #13.
2. thinner or fatter? Exactly the same.
3. richer or poorer? Sadly poorer because I realized that you don't do Greek and Latin grammar anymore in the last three years of school and since the girls that called me to give repetitions are in the first of the last three years my incomes have been shortened. ;)

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Probably studying at university instead of at home. Maybe I'd have met more people.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Procrastination.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Next year? Exactly as I spent it this year aka with my dad's family, someone dressed as Santa Claus in order to make the singing children happy and my uncle #1 being generally awesome.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Uhm, I think my aunt. She might call once every two weeks but when she does it lasts two hours.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?
No.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
I don't do one night stands. And I'm not quoting Kate. ;)

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Pushing Daisies probably. *sigh* And an Italian satiric program which is made of awesome.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Hate is a strong word but there's some people I'd like to strongly slap at least.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay hands down. American Gods soon after.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
STEVE EARLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

28. What did you want and get?
Uhm, I wanted to see the opera on my birthday instead of always being in my grandma's place in Sicily as for the last nineteen years. I had always wanted those four volumes of Orwell's articles/letters/essays and I got them. Those were the most important things I guess.

29. What did you want and not get?
Concert ticket/plane ticket/paid hotel to see Bon Jovi somewhere. Because clearly they tour and they don't come here. *sigh* I caaan't afford that.

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
Changeling. Wall-E. The fourth Indiana Jones. No Country For Old Men. Into The Wild. Of the ones which were out this year.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 20. I went to visit this noble historic in Pesaro which is where I was staying for the opera festival. I had dinner with my parents and a pretty good one, I finished reading The Handmaid's Tale or maybe started Alias Grace, I can't remember. And the day after I went to see the opera. \o/

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not having bought my dad for Christmas the deluxe edition of The Blues Brothers. Because it also featured the BB's harmonica and I seriously started to understand how Ennis felt in Brokeback Mountain.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
My personal fashion concept? I buy clothes at markets, I either wear band t-shirts or long sleeved stuff which was half my mother's and I don't use make-up.

34. What kept you sane?
Music, friends, LJ, writing.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Even with all the crap he made me watch... oh, His Prettiness, I love you so. And Bruce Springsteen. And Clint Eastwood. And Steve Earle. Even if I don't fancy Steve in the molest-you sense. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan. *licks lips*

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

/rant

*headdesk* My country's state of things and the election turnout. Well, okay, since we're here.. I hate my PM like I never, NEVER hated a politician all my life, I can't stand his face, I can't stand his voice, I can't stand his jokes, I can't stand 98% of his coalition, I can't stand that he still claims that there's no crisis and people should SPEND! because when you spend economy WORKS! when people don't have the money in the first place, there isn't a party which is actually LEFT anymore in the parliament or outside it, the center-left coalition which I voted without much hope is made of incompetents who would lose all over again if elections were held today and the 'left' party which is out of parliament isn't that much competent, too. I can't stand the Catholic Church messing with politics here as it does (see that cardinal saying that the ONU motion to forbid homosexuality as a crime in countries where there's the death penalty for it is wrong because as soon as you do it why, homosexuals suddenly get married), I am sick of funds for public school being cut while the funds for the private catholic schools are exactly the same, I'm pretty sick with the whole school reform actually and every time a politician talks here I wish he'd kept his mouth shut. Oh, and I want to vote for some LEFT wing. Which does NOT exist in this country. Why, yeah, never get me to talk about politics. Thank you so much.

/end rant

37. Who did you miss?
A couple of high school people I haven't talked to in ages.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Some people at university and I guess half of my FL ;)

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
Never take things for granted, if you want to do something you enjoy but shouldn't do it anyway and most of all, never take for granted that people who teach Greek Literature will be sane people. It usually doesn't happen.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?

Ouch. Hard. Probably Transcendental Blues by Steve Earle for some stuff in the last four months or so, but for the whole year it isn't exactly correct. Aw, I give up. I've been listening to too much country music this year and it's stuff that doesn't really click with my moods. ;)
