Title: the earth died screaming

Rating: I’ll give it a light R mostly for the themes
Characters/Pairing(s) : Jimmy Novak, Castiel, surprise character; no pairings/gen, though there’s some Jimmy/Amelia implied.
Warnings: character death (implied at the beginning and happening during the fic – it’s not Jimmy though), suicidal thoughts (even if it doesn’t happen and the death isn’t a suicide), possibly disturbing imagery and general angst overload.
Word Count: 12000 ca.
Spoilers: goes AU from 4x20 but implies certain plot points that were introduced in early S5; not more than that though.
Summary: After Heaven on Earth becomes real and the Apocalypse goes as angels had planned, Jimmy Novak finds himself in control of his own body again and seemingly the only real human left in a world where the climate has changed, ghost towns are the norm and time flows strangely. The fact that since he wakes up, and for the entire following year, he keeps on hearing Castiel's voice inside his head is probably just proof that he's going crazy.

A/N: this is based on Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, or one of the best books I had the pleasure to read in the last five years or so. The only thing that this has strictly in common with the book is the premise though, I took the plot in a completely different direction, so there’s nothing that will spoil you the book if you read this first. Also this might be the most depressing thing I’ve ever written, but on the other side it’s apocalypse fic and I figured I should have taken the apocalyptic part of it seriously for once. The title is from a Tom Waits song. Thanks so very much to wh1tfuldr3amer for the lovely banner and for the absolutely amazing video which is so very awesome (and please leave her a comment on YT as soon as I have the link for it because it's really amazing) and to cassiopeia7 who beta-ed this and who did an amazing job as usual. Oh, and to whom I owe a lot of tissues. I swear I'll make up for it.
