So, just because I was talking about the writer's block, today I was surfing as usual, stumbled upon  [livejournal.com profile] lostfichallenge, there was a prompt that fit like a glove for an idea I had for months, so I thought, hell, let's go with it ;) it's absolutely nothing special or whatever but at least I have something out. I just hope it's half decent and that helps the block. I don't think so but I hope XD

Summary: Sawyer should have listened to his dad, for once.

Sawyer had just one clear memory of his father.

At that time, he was six or seven years old, some time before anyway. It was an evening in which his dad seemed... well... kind of happy enough. Sometimes, in the weekends, he brought some friends over to play poker, three if he remembered right; they had their cold beer while his mother knitted next to him and he read some children’s book, and they played for a couple of hours every time.

That particular night nothing was out of the ordinary; he was going through his copy of Uncle Tom’s cabin, his mother had brough in some pizza that a guy who came regularly, his name was Doc, ordered half an hour before on his way and James, he still was James at that time, could hear his dad’s friends chattering. The game was going on and it seemed that one of his dad’s friends had won big time, at least because he looked very glad and the others very out of hope of gaining anything.

Anyway, they started eating and the chattering became louder.

“Charlie, this food’s crap! Where in God’s name have you bein’ orderin’ it?”, said the one who was winning.

“Jeez, Doc, ya can’t ‘preciate anythin’ that don’t come outta a five star restaurant, can ya? Anyway at Ma Flo’s down the road, if you still interested.”

They ate their pizza anyway, but when the game was over his dad had called him to the table. James had put his book down and went, then he was on his dad’s knee and he was watching him intently.

It wasn’t a pleasant stare.

“James, son, there’s just one thing I always want ya to remember. You hearin’ me?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Then, never forget this. There’s two things that you never should do, no matter what: first, never eat in a place called ‘Ma’ anythin’, and second and most important, never play cards with a man named Doc.”

Sawyer... well, he had never remembered any of that, not until now.

While he was watching Jack leaving the poker table, he suddenly had the flash of that sentence and froze in his seat.

“... son of a bitch.”

Alright, Jack’s name obviously wasn’t Doc, except that well, to him, it was.

He never had been superstitious or anything and he had eaten at plenty of Ma’s restaurants where the food was just as bad as anywhere, but damn, he should have definitely thought better of playing poker with Jack.

There was just one good thing, comin’ out of all that. He had a sparkling brand new nickname for Jack and next time he was definitely putting it to good use. But then, why waiting? He could do it just now.

“Hey, Doc Holliday! Why didn’t you ask me for the guns?”

Jack turned towards him and actually smirked.

“Well, when I’ll need the guns, I’ll get the guns... Wyatt Earp.”

Sawyer, who had just stood up, felt like crashing down again.

“How did ya call me?”

“Weren’t you the new sheriff in town?”

Jack turned away, somebody giggled and Sawyer, realizing that Jack had definitely pulled one over him, couldn’t even find the strength to glare.

“Well, Doc, you win.”, he muttered before heading to his tent.

Never play cards with a man named Doc. This’ll teach him alright.

The very end ;)
