I suddenly was in the mood and decided it was better to go for it before it disappeared and every possible bunny for those two got killed. Did I really write relatively angst-free het? Relatively. God, I really hope I avoided a sugar invasion.

Title: Waiting On a Sunny Day
Characters/Pairing: Sayid/Nadia
Rating: sorta R. *hides*
Disclaimer: Sure, because if they were mine, I'd have killed her. Clearly they aren't.
Word count: 2175
Spoilers: Up to 4x12.
Summary: Then their lips meet halfway, like they both knew it was going to happen and nothing had to be said and Nadia’s heart skips another beat when she thinks that it’s their first kiss.
A/N: for [livejournal.com profile] 5_loves #3, first. This.. well, guess it's hasn't half of the angst it should have. Blatantly ignores what happened in episode 4x09 because for once that I have (sort of) happy people I wanted to end it on a good note. I know that good Muslim men/women shouldn't really have sex before marriage but since Sayid seemingly had it (and also quite some it seems) and Nadia looks pretty on progressive positions to me every possible religious implication was blatantly ignored. Going back to the roots, since the title is stolen from Springsteen.

She’s nervous and there isn’t much she can try to do about it.

Nadia stands near the police car, waiting. She gave her name and now there isn’t much she can do, except this. She doesn’t know what she’s most afraid of; if it’s the idea that Sayid may not want to see her or the idea that he may want to see her making her nervous.

As soon as she read his name on that newspaper, the day after the crash, she knew why he was going to California and she had always felt partially responsible for it until she found out he was alive, after all.

She knows it’s ridiculous to think he might not want to see her. He was on that plane because he was searching for her in the first place, it’s irrational to think he might not step out of that building.

She can’t help shaking that feeling off, though.

--

Nadia comes back to California with them; at the airport, when they’re waiting for a taxi, she asks him if he wants to come over at hers for dinner.

Sayid has pictured many scenarios for the first question she would have asked him; but this one, it was one he hadn’t even thought about.

Well, it’s not like he can consider two options. There’s only one answer and it’s yes. She nods and smiles just slightly and he feels like starting to cry again because he really can’t believe it. It’s just too unreal, maybe as soon as he closes his eyes he’s going to wake up back there, but then her hand is on his wrist squeezing it, she’s real and for the first time he doesn’t feel the burden of that enormous lie heavy on his shoulders.

Nadia’s house is nice and neat; two floors, walls covered in bookshelves, a pretty big kitchen, big windows and plenty of light in the bottom one, two bedrooms in the upper one.

Sayid just glances at the guest bedroom while she’s cooking and it’s most empty, just a bed and a wardrobe. He knows he shouldn’t go in her room of all places, but the door is open and he can’t help at least taking a look. It’s not very big, really neat; a double bed is in the middle, covered in white sheets. On her nightstand there’s a neat pile of four of five books, then he can see a couple of chairs near the window. The window takes almost all of that wall and the view is just breathtaking from there; the curtains aren’t draped and the whole room is bathed in the warm colors of the sun at sunset.

“Do you like it?”

He turns and she’s there, looking pretty much amused and not upset as he’d have thought. Well, she never gave him permission to go into her room, right?

“I think you have a very nice house.”

“I’ve been living here for four years now. Yes, it’s nice.”

“Can I... can I ask you something?”

She nods and he wonders if he isn’t rushing things. But well, for how much he would like to accept Hurley’s offer he doesn’t know whether it’s the case or not.

“I just.. I don’t really have a place to stay right now and I was wondering if I could... take advantage of your guest room for a while?”

She smiles and shakes her head.

“You know I wouldn’t refuse it. But well, do you really want to stop at the guest room?”

Nadia suddenly doesn’t look at him anymore but at the ground and Sayid thinks he understood what she means.

He also thinks that it’s a gift he doesn’t deserve in the slightest, but then his eyes start to burn as they were this afternoon, she’s in his arms and her lips are on his and they both forget that he was here for dinner to begin with.

--

She brings her hands in front of her, interlacing her fingers and letting them linger on her skirt, then she breaks the contact and one hand goes to her hair, straightening it out, the other goes on her necklace. Nadia realizes she can’t keep them still.

The dress she’s wearing is nothing too fancy, but she thinks it’s pretty, she feels comfortable in it, it’s one of the first she bought after settling in what was her new house at the time; Nadia can safely say it’s her favorite.

She had known about that conference with a good week of advance; three days before, she had washed the dress, then ironed it, then kept it hanged in her closet separated from all the others, then folded it neatly and didn’t put it in her suitcase but put it in a small handbag and carried it on the plane. She doesn’t even know why she had that need to wear it but fact is, she spent an entire day after that dress in order to make it look perfect.

Now she feels as comfortable as possible in it and she’s glad she did all that work.

She takes a few steps forward, then backward, then stops again. The wait is killing her, but the girl has been gone for maybe a minute. It’s just that it seems so much more.

--

Nadia’s bed is soft and the sheets are cool and smooth under his hands; he slowly opens the first two buttons of the dress, then when she nods his hand goes to the ribbon tied at her waist and undoes it. Suddenly his fingers tremble and he has never felt so nervous since, well, since.

He realizes this really is their first time together. Surely it’s not the first for him nor for her but it is for them and he suddenly feels disoriented and dizzy.

Then her hands are on his shoulders and they kiss again; Nadia’s skin is warm and soft under his fingers which are slowly caressing her stomach.

He can still feel an arm around his shoulder and fingers threading through his hair when her other hand goes on his belt and he realizes that they’re both trying to get rid of their shoes at the same time. He leaves her for a second, kicks his off, then carefully takes hers off her feet; three seconds later they’re both on their knees on the mattress, the dress half fallen from her shoulders and barely staying up only at her waist while he’s shirtless and his belt is on the floor.

She doesn’t rush and he doesn’t either; he thinks he needs to remember every second of it and he hopes they’re going to have time to rush, after. Not now.

When her nails dig into his shoulders and he leaves an irregular pattern of kisses along her neck, she’s the only thought he’s capable of forming.

He doesn’t think about the conference, about, about it, about Sun’s face when she met his eyes (this is so wrong under every aspect, they said while she was lying, and it had been the same for him), at Jack’s voice, so steady and yet so false, at Kate saying I was six months pregnant. He just forgets it all and buries his face in her hair, drowning in her scent. She smells good, just as fresh and clean as she tastes and he thinks he can make out the smell of the rice with curry she was cooking before and which they’ll probably throw away tomorrow morning. They kiss again, her lips insistent against his (she wants it at least as much as he does, he can’t doubt it for a second), though it’s slow and more like a caress than anything else.

When he’s inside her he moves slowly, gently, holding her to his chest, her low moans music to his ears; then there’s just a wave that leaves him breathless and shaking upon her when it’s over, the air is suddenly unbearably hot (like back on the island) but she doesn’t move too much. He just holds her tighter and when she’s breathing evenly against his neck Sayid thinks he really didn’t deserve something so magnificent, not after, but he has it, she’s here after all that time and thinks that he just might allow himself to let the rest go and savor it.

--

She doesn’t blame him for what happened. She knows he was playing a part and even if sometimes when she wakes up in the middle of the night for no reason, her hands feel like they’re burning and she realizes her skin will never be smooth again there, she knows it really wasn’t him and she doesn’t really hold anything against him.

Nadia knows he’s already done the job for her and that he will never forgive himself for it, she thinks she knows him enough to say it, but when he comes, if he comes, she’s going to tell him. Nadia thinks she could forgive him anything really if he just showed up, truth to be told.

She looks at her watch. Two minutes. It’s nothing, and yet it feels so much time.

--

Nadia is the first and only one that hears the truth from him.

It was wonderful for those three months and Sayid doesn’t think he has ever felt so happy in his whole life. They live in her house, share her bed; he cooks rice with curry for her when she’s back from work (he’s got a settlement, he can afford it) and whenever she smiles he feels like he could just stop time in that very moment.

But as he tells her what really happened, he realizes he couldn’t have held it much longer. He needed to tell someone and she’s the only one he trusts. Maybe she’ll leave, after she hears it. That’s fine. He already had more than he could have ever hoped or deserved and he knows she won’t tell, either way.

When his story is over, he looks at the sheets on the bed, of a light yellow now, not white as they were the first time.

She doesn’t go; all the contrary.

She puts an arm around his shoulder and he can’t help but clinging on to her desperately and he can’t help that tear escaping when she says she understood why they did it and well, she could forgive him sort of anything after believing for years that they would have really seen each other again in another life.

Nadia is the first woman he proposes to, the day after he tells her; she says yes.

Until then, Sayid couldn’t shake off the feeling that one day or the other she was going to realize with whom she was and maybe she could have a second thought about forgiving him, but as she accepts he realizes she’s here to stay and he’s here to stay, too.

They have a civil wedding; Hurley is Sayid’s witness and a friend of Nadia’s at the lab hers. The only people present are Jack (Kate had to stay with the baby), Hurley’s parents and Sun sent her wishes. It’s fine like this.

When they leave the courthouse, a silver band is around both of their fingers, she wears the dress she wore when she came at the conference and Sayid just smiles at her and kisses her again.

Every time feels like the first.

--

He steps out of that door and suddenly everything stops; Sayid turns to her, he meets her eyes and Nadia just can’t move for a second.

He looks somewhat different from last time she saw him, but that was a given; he’s wearing civil clothes, she can see the eight years that passed between then and now on his face, she notices that his legs shake but so do hers.

When he speaks her name her heart skips a beat.

It’s a warm, sunny day and a light breeze moves her skirt. She takes a couple of steps towards him, he does the same and when he holds her to him she realizes the wait is over and they really don’t need to speak.

They don’t and then something wet is on her cheek. Their lips brush and she’d wipe that wetness away from his skin if she didn’t need to feel her hands on his back. Then their lips meet halfway, like they both knew it was going to happen and nothing had to be said and Nadia’s heart skips another beat when she thinks that it’s their first kiss. She parts her lips a bit, letting Sayid’s move against them and she allows herself not to think about anything which isn’t the warmth of the sunlight on her back and the feel of Sayid’s arms closed around her shoulders. She thinks it’s also the first time they really embraced since they lost touch many years before, when he went one way and she went the opposite. None of it really matters now.

End.
