So thing is, today I was supposed to do stuff. But it had to be the day in which being a woman sucks and since I couldn't bring myself to do a single useful thing, I went and watched the first seven episodes of The Wire, S1.
1. So, I'm loving it so far. It really is good, the writing is excellent and it managed to make me feel miserable once already. Which is good, means I'm caring for it.
2. Before I forget it, since I could, is Kevin Johnson the name of that kid who becomes blind in one eye because of that policeman with the impossible name? Or I was completely out of it?
3. Alright, it's probably too early to draw out favorites but I think I'm rooting mostly for the Greggs girl (god, does she kick ass? I love her!), Omar, Bubbles (who's totally awesome) and well, if Detective McNulty wants to show me how comfortable his mattress his, I'd be more than glad to try it. I think he totally had me when they showed him getting the newspaper in I think episode 2? God, that was a nice visual.
4. I think I'm developing some sort of affection for Bubbles' addict friend there. I've sort of got the impression that I should stop myself.
5. Creepy-Not-Oceanic is a compelling character I have to say.
6. Is that wrong that I felt completely miserable when they killed Omar's boyfriend?
7. Of course the Major/McNulty's boss/whatever he is isn't going to disappear magically now, right? I think I could strangle him.
8. McNulty's Homicide friend there is sort of awesome.
9. 'Hello, I'm Walton and I'm a drug addict.' -> LOL STEVE EARLE WINS. Seriously. He wins. I get what he meant when he said they wrote the role for him so that he didn't even need to act because he totally wasn't acting. LOL again and uhm, he wins. Totally.
10. I'll admit I had to see the first five with english subtitles because I didn't get half of the dialogue/the accent was throwing me off. But by six I got it alright.
11. How good to see strong women characters. Thanks Greggs for existing. I love that woman.
12. IDK how I should feel about the D'Angelo kid. At times he seems decent enough, then I change idea. IDK how I feel about Creepy-Not-Oceanic truth to be told. Because he's decent and then he does something that makes me rather perplexed. Though his pajama is something way amusing.
13. What's with every ex-wife on TV being a total and utter bastard to her ex-husband? I can't remember one who isn't and the one here isn't an exception.
14. God, McNulty and the twin beds kind of killed me. Well, him, the twin beds, the leather coat and... okay, right, yeah, I found my eye candy.
15. Though this probably could change as soon as people which haven't been around that much grow on me.
16. I probably had something more worthy to say but it's midnight and I think I forgot. But anyway, I'm really liking it up to now. I'll reiterate that the writing is just great and I love how realistic it is. Guess I'll see more of it this week, though not seven in one setting. I need to save some for this summer.

This is definitely not a feel good show but the crappy stuff at least feels genuine and not for shock value, unlike some other shows. But yeah, brace yourself to be kicked in the guts at least twice a season.
is Kevin Johnson the name of that kid who becomes blind in one eye
Hmm. I don’t know. That would be a funny coincidence or a very strange homage!
I'm rooting mostly for the Greggs girl (god, does she kick ass? I love her!), Omar, Bubbles (who's totally awesome) and well, if Detective McNulty wants to show me how comfortable his mattress his, I'd be more than glad to try it.
Griggs is one of my favourites too. Bubbles is number one and only ends up sharing that spot with another character who is new in season 4. Omar kicks ass in both concept and execution. It was very sad when his boyfriend died. I also really like Lester Freemon (toy furniture guy) and Prez (kid shooting cop. Yes him, just wait). Some days I could give or take McNulty but he does provide the eye candy. Be forewarned, sometimes McNulty doesn’t even need a mattress.
I think I'm developing some sort of affection for Bubbles' addict friend there.
Oh, I know. He just hurts my heart.
I'll admit I had to see the first five with English subtitles because I didn't get half of the dialogue/the accent was throwing me off.
Hey, as a native English speaker it was difficult for me too. It’s kind of like Shakespeare that way. It sounds foreign but once your ear gets used to it, it sounds more familiar.
How good to see strong women characters.
Rhonda, the D.A. also comes into her own. There’s also a great female character, Beadie, who joins in season two. I also enjoy how they explore gender on the streets.
IDK how I should feel about the D'Angelo kid. At times he seems decent enough, then I change idea. IDK how I feel about Creepy-Not-Oceanic truth to be told. Because he's decent and then he does something that makes me rather perplexed. Though his pajama is something way amusing.
Yes and yes. More characters are shades of grey. There are few, if any good or bad guys.

Oh, I know. She should meet up with Sarah Shephard. However, it becomes more and more apparent that McNulty sucked as a husband so a lot of her wrath is deserved.
Though this probably could change as soon as people which haven't been around that much grow on me.
Keep an eye on Carver. He really grew on me in the eye candy department.

Date: 2008-05-27 07:43 am (UTC)Of course that had to be the first episode I didn't download the subtitles for, but I'm sure I heard some Kevin Johnson said somewhere. But since it was Creepy-Not-Oceanic saying it I could have probably dreamed it, which is a concrete possibility.
Oh, so McNulty doesn't even need that? That's interesting. Way much. /closes shallow corner/ Greggs is great. I totally root for her. And Bubbles will probably grow on me, I recognize the symptoms already.
Oh, I know. He just hurts my heart.
Mine, too! God, in the pilot he was making me totally miserable.
I also liked the D.A. but didn't mention her since she was in three episodes and I didn't see her much, but she's definitely got the potential. And I'm liking the fact that it's not all black and white characters.
However, it becomes more and more apparent that McNulty sucked as a husband so a lot of her wrath is deserved.
Then I should rephrase it in how is that possible that in every divorced couple on TV the guy totally sucked as a husband and then when after the divorce he's fairly more decent the wife is a total bastard to him? ;) I mean, I've yet to see on TV a couple which divorces because they don't work together and where they don't want to kill each other every time they speak. Oh well.
Carver is promising indeed! I'll definitely keep an eye there, oh yes.
