Title: Tunnel of Love
Pairing: Desmond/Penny, Sun/Jin, Charlie/Claire, Sayid/Nadia, sort of Jack/Sawyer
Word counting: 1300
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: Since it's everybody going to weddings, I figure Lost is soo not mine.
Spoilers: AU for S3. Let's say up to One of Us. Implies that everyone got rescued then and that Penny rescued them in person. Also, Charlie didn't die. Ha.
Summary: Desmond suddenly finds that he can’t wait. His hand goes to her shoulder, awakening her. There’s only one thing he can say, as soon as he speaks, not letting her speak first.
A/N: Queen
thespiansparkle asked for marriages and since her OTP is Des/Penny, here I deliver twelve drabbles (one 200 words) with scenes from their wedding and also from before, sadly not in chronological order because I'm weird. But since the Queen will surely indulge me in my Springsteen-crazy ideas, seeing how we approve of the man, she won't surely mind that I structured this thing around my favorite record of his, which would be Tunnel of Love (yes, I am indeed weird) ;) I hope I didn't end up in Sap Land really. *lays humble offer at the Queen's feet*
1. Ain't Got You
I'm still the biggest fool honey this world ever knew
'Cause the only thing I ain't got baby I ain't got you.
Desmond knows he made a mistake as soon as she walks away; he doesn’t realize how big it is until he’s on the train to Camp Millow, London seeming not days but ages behind.
It’s when he suddenly feels like throwing up and his head aches just because he thought I miss her that he realizes exactly how much.
He regrets throwing that ring away now; his hands shake underneath the jacket thrown over his lap. He knows he won’t have another chance to propose; but if he does, he swears to himself that he won’t make the same mistake.
2. Tougher Than the Rest
Well there's another dance, all you gotta do is say yes
And if you're rough and ready for love honey I'm tougher than the rest.
Sun’s hand is on her stomach, caressing the round curve beneath her blue satin dress, a small smile gracing her features. She sits, taking sips from a glass of water.
People are dancing in the hall; she doesn’t know at least half of the already not numerous guests.
Hurley is in one corner, pushing Charlie towards Claire. Jack is looking nervous, she catches a glimpse of Sawyer’s hair. She feels a bit tired, but when Jin approaches her, extends a hand in her direction and there’s a small white flower in his other one, she stands up and takes it.
3. All That Heaven Will Allow
I got something on my mind that sets me straight and walkin' proud
And I want all the time, all that heaven will allow
Charlie never felt comfortable in suits. He feels suffocated; this is no exception. His hands shake in his pockets, watching Claire and her aunt on the other side of the hall. As Tears Go By is playing; he itches to cross that room but he can’t. Maybe now it wouldn’t work, it’s been just a month, they haven’t seen each other since rescuing and...
“Dude. Just go, won’t you?”
Hurley then pushes him; when he has stumbled for half the room crashing against three couples, giving Claire the resigned smile and ask her is the only thing he can do.
4. Spare Parts
Spare parts and broken hearts
Keep the world turnin' around
Sawyer doesn’t know why the fuck he’s here. It’s not like it’s an occasion suited to him anymore.
Weddings were good hunting ground once; they aren’t now and why he said he would come is a mystery to him, especially since it implied crossing an ocean.
If anything, he should be in the same federal prison where Freckles is serving right now, but hey, if there’s something he’s good at, is not getting caught. Everyone dances, even the doc with a random cousin of Desmond’s; he can’t shake off the feeling that he’s just a spare part in this device.
5. Cautious Man
When something caught his eye he'd measure his need
And then very carefully he'd proceed
Hurley can’t help thinking about how would it feel if Libby was here; but she isn’t and he isn’t one that likes to cry too much over what’s lost.
He smiles when he sees Claire handing the baby to her aunt; he’s tempted to investigate why it is that Sawyer is the only brooding person in the hall. He won’t for now; if there’s one thing he knows, it’s that sometimes it’s better to do things cautiously. He keeps watching and greets Sayid and his girlfriend when they get in. He feels quite content; he definitely does enjoy the sensation.
6. Walk Like a Man
Tonight you step away from me and alone at the alter I stand
And as I watch my bride coming down the aisle I pray for the strength to walk like a man
Penny doesn’t seem much nervous as she crosses the aisle of the city hall, her father on her side; but she almost falls when her left foot gets tangled in her simple white dress. She can’t wrap her head around the concept of her father being present at hers and Desmond’s wedding.
She knows he doesn’t like it, but he’s here.
She can see the way Desmond’s right hand trembles and a shiver runs down her spine when it suddenly becomes as firm as ever when he shakes her father’s.
As soon as his left one closes around her right, it’s shaking again. She does indeed know how he’s feeling.
Only a couple of Desmond’s cousins and one of his brothers came; her father is her only relative and well, she can definitely appreciate the effort he’s making.
The ceremony is brief, no frills; her heart beats at a rate she wouldn’t have believed when he says I do. Her voice doesn’t falter when she says the same; he takes a ring from Charlie and slips it on her finger, Penny feels his skin rough under her fingers while she mirrors the action.
As they kiss she feels like bursting.
7. Tunnel of Love
You've got to learn to live with what you can't rise above
If you want to ride on down in through this tunnel of love
Claire was waiting for him. It had been quite a way of asking, but with Charlie, one couldn’t expect any less.
She had this idea he would be a good dancer; he is. Musicians can’t be bad dancers, right?
He’s strangely silent while one of his hands brushes over her hip and the fingers of the other interlace with hers; but as their lips accidentally brush when the Stones switch to Dire Straits, she thinks out of the blue that this feels like a ride on a tunnel of love. It sort of surprises her. But why not going along?
8. Two Faces
Sometimes mister I feel sunny and wild, Lord I love to see my baby smile
Then dark clouds come rolling by, two faces have I
Nadia almost never thinks about what happened last time she saw Sayid before the rescue.
He’s the man she remembers from before the war now, or at least as close as he can be; the way his hand shakes against hers whenever they do hold hands because of her scarred skin is a remarkable proof of the way he’s changed.
Sometimes, when she can see from his eyes that his mind drifts someplace else, she can’t help wondering what he’s thinking about and that if there’s something she doesn’t know. She does wonder now, joining the dancing crowd alongside him.
9. Brilliant Disguise
So when you look at me you better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby or just a brilliant disguise?
Sayid shares a smile with Hurley, then figures, why shouldn’t they not dance?
As he takes Nadia’s hand, not thinking about what it reminds him, he can’t help wondering whether this is fooling them both. It’s a moment once in a while, in which he thinks he doesn’t really deserve any of this. He still feels that he hasn’t killed that side of him he wishes he could erase.
Looking at her and at her dress swirling in a swift motion brings him back to the present; he wonders what would she answer, if he asked her that certain question.
10. One Step Up
I dreamed I held you in my arms, the music was never-ending
We danced as the evening sky faded to black one step up and two steps back
Jack asks him whether he’s up to give the hall a little shock and give dancing a try; Sawyer looks at him like he has gone crazy. It has to be because of that.
A kiss between them that just happened once on the island. He thought Jack had forgotten it. He though he had forgotten it.
It’s a mystery to him why he nods.
Sawyer has danced with lots of women.
None were as bad dancers as Jack is, but there’s something in the way Jack’s breath is warm against Sawyer’s neck that makes him ignore everything else altogether.
11. When You're Alone
I knew some day your runnin' would be through and you'd think back on me
And your love would be strong
You'd forget all the bad and think only of all the laughs that we had and you'd wanna come home
As Jack sees Sawyer alone at the counter of the room’s bar, he joins him there, placing himself far enough.
He drinks a bit of whatever cocktail they serve him; his mind goes straight to what happened the day before the raft launched.
It lasted three seconds, they agreed it didn’t have sense, they hadn’t talked or thought about it again. He’s doing it now though; for the first time since the rescue, he can’t shake away a certain feeling of loneliness that he doesn’t really welcome.
Why not?, he thinks, leaving his drink and deciding to go for it.
12. Valentine's Day
So hold me close honey say you're forever mine
And tell me you'll be my lonely valentine
It’s been two weeks and Penny lays beside him in her apartment’s bed; it’s three in the night when he wakes up from a nightmare filled with quarantines, numbers, buttons and blood against a rock. So vivid that for a second he thinks that this is the dream.
He remembers thinking that whether he had another chance, he wasn’t going to blow it.
Desmond suddenly finds that he can’t wait. His hand goes to her shoulder, awakening her. There’s only one thing he can say, as soon as he speaks, not letting her speak first.
“Penny, will you marry me?”
End.
