1) So I'm finally under antibiotics and of course the one I'm taking has the side effect of leaving a total sour taste in my mouth all day unless I'm eating. *sigh*

2) Seriously, most stupid thing I've heard since this country's PM's jokes on Barack Obama.

Yesterday, they were airing Brokeback Mountain at 11 PM, so late night. I was kind of surprised at the channel since it's not exactly the most homosexual-friendly of the public television, but whatever. So, my mom calls me because even if she hadn't seen it she had guessed what it was and it was from the point where they find the dead sheep, so I don't know if they left the tent scene. But whatever, after agreeing on being both on team Ennis, since the dubbing was atrocious and it was getting late I told her I own the dvd we could watch it together (sixth time for me, figure that out) another time and we shut the TV off. It was more or less twenty to midnight and there was still Ennis and his wife discussing moving, so I figure that the kiss scene in my icon there would have been aired around midnight or something.

So, today she calls me and there's this totally brilliant comedian who always makes my day which had this sketch on the liberal-oriented channel and he starts making fun of the fact that the kiss scene was cut and that at this point if they had cut an Oscar winning movie for that they could have not aired it at all.

Seriously, what the fuck? Now I wish I had caught it before to see if they left the tent scene, even if I'd be surprised if they did. But seriously, they cut the kiss scene? Come on, if you take that off half of what happens next doesn't make sense. And it was freaking midnight, geez, if someone was disgusted by the topic he wouldn't watch the movie at all and if someone stays up to see that and didn't turn off his innocent eyes at the tent scene they can endure a kiss. This either makes me want to headdesk or laugh at whoever decided this thing's stupidity and I guess I'll go for the latter but really, what-the-fuck. And thankfully they didn't kiss passionately during the 'I wish I knew how to quit you' scene because I'm sure it'd have got cut at one in the night.

3) I've got the Christmas cards almost ready, I only miss five which I'm going to buy tomorrow. Also, it's a random selection of Unicef cards and made-in-Nepal cards I bought at one of those fair-trade shops (is it like that?) and I don't know what else I'm getting tomorrow. I'm going to assign them at random as I bought them randomly. ;)

4) I seriously need to hurry up with the Hohoho assignment *sigh*. But I'm not running late at least.

5) First and last time I'll talk about Twilight here since I've got a lot of friends who like it and I really don't want to offend anyone. But. The point is that I don't-give-a-damn about it. Apart from the fact that I don't like vampire books which aren't parodies on default (I hated Interview With The Vampire with a force and I found Dracula so boring that I left it at one third), from what excerpts I read it's really not my cup of tea, also stylistically. Mostly because I can write my own Mary Sue without searching for one, because I read fanfiction which in comparison to Twilight is Dante Alighieri and most of all, vampires do not dazzle and sure as hell do not sparkle if I remember that quote right. But anyway. I'm sick of having it thrown in my face wherever I go. Damnit, I see it at the postal office, my favorite bookshop has piles of it around and it's half of what you can see on first look, yesterday I was at a fair where small-medium editors sell books and there was this enormous stand where they offered the whole saga and a t-shirt of the movie (and bag of the movie and posters and behind-the-scenes and stuff) at a lesser price, Robert Pattinson's face (and I don't even find him attractive) is all over the city in a way that doesn't happen even when Harry Potter movies come out and frankly, I don't give a damn. When is this whole hype going to be over? Because I'm getting sick tired of it. And then I heard that they're shooting the next movie in Italy and I just want to cringe at the thought. I-can't-stand-it.

Also? There's only one literary Edward I'll ever care for and his surname is Dean. And thankfully he never sparkled. God, I wish The Dark Tower had one tenth of the exposure this stuff has, at least I wouldn't have had one month to wait for the original hardcovers to arrive in the bookshop. /end rant

6. Woah, I hadn't started this post wanting to make it ranty. Well, happened.

7. Guess that's all for now? *goes writing*

8. Oh, damn, I forgot to watch Heroes. If the writing doesn't want to come I'll have a laugh.

Because I live in a country where it will take at least five hundred years and the Catholic Church stopping interfering with everything not concerning personal faith to get across the point that homosexuals are normal people *sigh*. Seriously, I can't think of another reason for them cutting it if not the fact that censors here are a bunch of prudes that gave Hannibal a free-for-all rating because of how it would gross and then cut BBM on TV. I'm sorry for them, but at least I've got my dvd WITH the kiss ;)

*gasp* Men with men! What is the world coming to?

Stupid censors. That is a hot kiss and should be retained in all its glory. Plus when the gay love story is THE CENTRAL PLOT OF THE FILM why even bother screening the movie if you are going to cover it up? After midnight too?! That's just weird.

Yay! Fellow Twilight hater!!! I've never even tried to read those books. I sat listening to a book club discussion on it and it sounded SO Mary-Sueish. The prose is really that bad, huh? I used to love Poppy Z Brites queer vampire stories, but then those books were written for punk/gothic readers, not the cheesy whitebread mainstream.

From: [identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com
I've read some Twilight excerpts and I swear, when I wrote my Mary Sue at 12 years old I was better. Apart from dazzling and sparkling vampires (dazzle? SPARKLE???), when even Robert Pattinson there says he felt uncomfortable reading the book because it was the writer's sexual fantasies on paper, there you have it. Bad fanfiction getting published and I seriously, seriously can't stand bad prose. If something is badly written I can't read it even to laugh at it and if I want to read fanfiction I know where to get it. And what, punk/gothic vampires? Interesting! Maybe that'd be more interesting than your usual vampire book. The only vampire book I liked was Salem's Lot by King and the vampire wasn't good looking and killed without remorse. ;)

Well, see, we have the wrong date. We are still in the Dark Ages, not in 2006! Seriously, that thing pissed me off. It was even midnight, not even prime time! Not that they'd have aired BBM in prime time. And seriously AGREED. That kiss the the pivotal scene of the movie, without it the rest would feel WTF? or something. And that was a HOT kiss indeed, anyway. ;)

And what, punk/gothic vampires? Interesting! Maybe that'd be more interesting than your usual vampire book.

Yeah, they are! I read Poppy Zs gothic horror novels when I was about 16. 'Lost Souls' is a story set in New Orleans about gay vampires who listen to Tom Waits, love sugery food and drink chartreuse to make their eyes glow green. Like all vampire stories the prose was dreamy and it was all about sexual fantasy, but it was more like good slash fic than bad Mary Sue fic!

*mmm* Enjoying your icon...

... okay, I need to read that. Because gay vampires who listen to Tom Waits? That puts any 'original' vampire plot I ever read to shame. And if it was like good slash fic I'm all fine with that.

I remember when we got Brokeback Mountain on TV and it was shown in its entirity...however, despite this, the same channel that aired it first feels the need to cut Watership Down.

As for Twilight, I was asking people a few weeks ago whether it was worth my money and effort to buy and read the series. I decided it wasn't but I will see the film (and the only reason for that is because I have a film pass that allows me to have unlimited trips to the cinema for £11.99 a month). As a self-proclaimed film buff, I make the effort to see every 'blockbuster' and film starring a major actor/ess (like I saw Lakeview Terrace because it had Samuel L Jackson it: it was terrible).

Ok, I'm sick and I like to say stuff in the form of comments.

From: [identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com
They seriously cut Watership Down? Oh God. Seriously, censors are horrible.

I want a pass like that too! And hey, I watch all the movies from that guy I spammed yesterday and they ALL suck. From what I gathered, the Twilight movie is better than the books and doesn't have the infamous 'do I dazzle you' quote because seriously, dazzling vampires? All the excerpts I read were so bad that I seriously burst out laughing at some parts. ;)

Date: 2008-12-09 11:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] one-winged-hao.livejournal.com
They cut the part where the dogs attack the rabbits. I have no idea why.

And someone had told me that Twilight read like a teenage written fanfic although during all my years of writing fanfiction, I've never once used the word 'dazzle' in any form.

Date: 2008-12-09 11:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com
O_O'''''' that's stupid. Well, like cutting a kiss when before you had actual sex in the tent.

Yes, that's pretty much it. Except that when I wrote fanfiction with Mary Sues (a looong time ago, thankfully), I was less ridiculous and I surely never used anything such as dazzle either. Or sparkle. I mean, sparkling vampires? Are they vampires or Christmas trees? ;)

Date: 2008-12-09 11:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] one-winged-hao.livejournal.com
Well the sex could easily be explained to a kid or a homophobe as 'fighting'. IMO, the kiss is one of the best parts. That and the whole 'I WISH I COULD QUIT YOU' and the fact that Ennis always calls Jack "Jack fucking Twist"

I've honestly never wrote a 'Mary Sue' fic. I can't stand writing females so to write one in any form (even if it's a representation of me) would just kill me inside. I'm all about the man on man action, mainly because I can't write women.

Date: 2008-12-09 11:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com

Best-quote-ever. The Mary Sue thing is actually one that I'm ashamed of, but I guess I had to get it out of the system. When I turned to men on men action it was everlasting love ;) now Lost has kinda made me write some het again but surely not the mary sue kind and I always write slash on first basis. ;) I prefer men too ;)

IMO, the kiss is one of the best parts. That and the whole 'I WISH I COULD QUIT YOU' and the fact that Ennis always calls Jack "Jack fucking Twist"

INDEED. God. I LOVE that movie. Seriously. Apart that the problem is that if you cut the kiss, you don't get half of what happens later and when Ennis' wife tells him he saw them kissing one would kind of wonder when it happened. And yeah, you have a point about the sex, even though at this point I'd like to know what happened to the other tent scene. The one where Ennis gets back in there and they kiss. Which could actually be my overall favorite.

Your icon made me go "guuuh..." for a moment. Ahem. Brokeback Mountain is a great film. The tent parts didn't interest me as much as the non-descriptive motel part. I wish they'd gone into more detail there. Ennis all snuggled in Jack's arms...I think Jack made him his bitch that night.

I really need to watch Lost now. I've never really thought that much about TV slashy pairings. Although, Sam and Dean in Supernatural are really, really, really homoerotic sometimes and I don't care that they are brothers. I need to slash them up sometime. Same goes with Nathan and Peter Petrelli (assume they are both still alive on the series, I lost interest after series 2 because it went downhill)

MMMMMM I'M WITH YOU. That part was a wasted opportunity. And I'm also sure that when I saw it at a screening they did here during the Venice festival (we get the movies one week after it ends lol) the I-wish-how-to-quit-you scene was longer. But I might be mistaken.

Well, Lost is a heaven for slash. There's a lot of it and they're all good looking men on there, I kinda see it everywhere. And I ship both Sam/Dean and Nathan/Peter, I can overlook the brothers angle as long as it's males on a tv show and that there isn't any breeding possibility (I can't do het incest *shiver*). Anyway, Nathan and Peter are both alive and the show is a wreck. I'm watching it only for them really.

Well I've only seen the full version (I have it on dvd) so I have no idea what a cut version looks like. I didn't think any country was that weird about homosexuality in films these days. It's like being in the dark ages.

Alegedly (my friend told me this), the actors that play Sam and Dean are so 'friendly' off set that the crew have to keep them apart to cease gay rumours. As for athan, I got so angry when series two started and he had a beard and no very expensive suit.

Date: 2008-12-09 11:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com
Oh, he's all polished now and VERY pretty. 85% of why I watch that really.

LOL, the actors playing Sam and Dean actually live together. They're so obviously in love that they aren't even funny, really. And from the amount of fanfiction that there is with those two I doubt people will stop slashing them anytime soon.

I meant that I had seen the full version at the festival and then I have this impression that on the official release three months later some scenes were shorter, but it was on the dvd too so that might have been the director or me hallucinating (guess the latter). ;) And I so have the dvd too, which I'll gladly re-watch one of these days.

I agree with Falafel. If you have a problem with homosexuality or queer culture, why show it at all? I hope they did not think the ending was a morality lesson. I can't watch movies on TV anymore. Here we just normally cut for time, which is annoying, if not offensive.

Ugh Twilight. I have now two girlfriends, in their 30s, both former English majors, who think it is the best thing ever. They both admit the writing sucks, but they are enthralled by the 'romance'. To see what the fuss was, I read the first book a few years ago, and found it really dumb and anti-feminist. The sparkly guy was creepy and stalkerish. The girl was so Mary Sue, she was a Marianne Suzanne. And the idea that a vampire would keep his immorality undercover by continually going to high school was laughable. Put a stake in me!

Date: 2008-12-09 11:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com
That exactly, I'm with the both of you. Fine, that is the most right-oriented channel of all the public television (at least not owned yet by the PM even if that one is kinda on his policy) and I was seriously surprised that they would show it, but that was just dumb especially when you see what they cut and what they didn't. Agreed about the ending, but at this point I doubt that someone who has a problem with homosexuals would watch it at all. I don't really watch movies on TV either because of the time-cutting policy, too. With stuff like The Good, The Bad and the Ugly they always do it because it's too long, but it's indeed annoying. *sigh*

Ooooouch. It's the part about the writing that sucks that I don't get. I might be a tad intolerant but when vampires are sparkly I draw a line, bad writing just makes me close the book. From what I read that has to be anti-feminist indeed, and if Meyer's Marianne Suzanne (awesome!) even is in an anti-feminist novel I'd just rather not know what else is in there. I read some excerpts from the last book on a community somewhere and God, that was some of the worst prose I ever read.

And the idea that a vampire would keep his immorality undercover by continually going to high school was laughable

That's actually the first thing I thought after hearing the plot. WTF? I'd rather have a stake indeed!

I know! I don't get people excusing the bad writing, because of a 'good' story. I can occasionally do this with a bad movie because there are so many layers, writing, acting, directing, pretty things to look at etc. But with a book, all you have is the words to create everything else. If the words suck, so does the story.

Sigh, I want to watch Brokeback again.

I’m running behind on the beta. I will get a chance to read tomorrow on the bus, but won’t have internet access until close to midnight to send you any comments.

Yeah, I don't get that either. I mean, if I want to laugh every time I read a line how can I take the story seriously? *sigh* Ditto about the movies, but with books it's either one way or the other.

And I totally want to re-watch it, too. I'm soo digging the DVD out.

Don't worry for that, I still have another two chapters covered ;) that will be no problem, thanks again!

I can't believe they left the kissing scene out. I mean, why air in the first place if you find the subject of the movie offensive? Reminds me of a Greek TV show that aired a few years ago and included a gay couple. Everything was fine, the show was one of the most popular ones, no one minded, but when during the second season they shot a kiss between said couple, everyone suddenly made a HUGE deal out of it and the network had to pay a very large fine for it 'cause "OMG, it traumatized our children!" Ridiculous.

I LOVE that you got Unicef and hand-made cards! Love it. *makes mental note do that too next year*

And finally, I'm so glad I'm not the only one that found Dracula painfully boring. Not even the fact that our professor spend hours and hours gushing about its homosexual undertones and motifs (I think she was a secret slasher at heart!) was enough to keep me interested. Loved the movie though.

Looks like they did and like, seriously? But it's just stupid to cut THAT and not the whole when-they-are-on-the-mountain part, even if now I need to find someone who actually saw it to see if they went and cut there, too. Seriously, it was also aired after midnight, I doubt any poooor children will be traumatized by such a dangerous scene (especially if the children already saw the whole tent deal, bu that isn't a time where children watch TV anyway. Or so I hope). And boo for having to pay a fine for that. Ugh.

Glad to have given a good idea! ;) If I can't find the remaining I need today I'll just be buying another Unicef batch and keep the ones I didn't use for next year. ;)

Homosexual undertones? Pff, maybe I was too young to get that (even if when I was seven I was sure that Lennon and McCartney were married but let's skip that) but that book was so boring that I left it alone before the Transylvania part was over. But at least it wasn't badly written and Dracula didn't sparkle ;) and yay for your professor! I actually love the movie (both Coppola and the '30s one), too. I have problems with literary vampires, not cinema vampires (as long as it isn't Tom Cruise playing Lestat because that was ridiculous ;) ).

I'm not really surprised by the missing cutting scene from BBM, mostly because I can see that happening here. You'd think that the Catholic Church has bigger and more important things to deal with than two guys kissing, but you'd be wrong. Stupid censors.

Oh, Twilight. We have two of the books at my bookstore and I only managed to read two paragraphs before putting it away. They're absolutely horrible - there'd bad writing and there's cringe-worthy writing. I think we all wrote better and more realistic love stories before puberty hit us.

I'm so hopelessly deadlocked with my Hohoho fic. I have no idea of what I'm going to do.
